Why Was an Upgrade Needed?
The Passenger Reservation System (PRS) is the technological backbone of Indian Railways, handling everything from bookings and cancellations to seat allocations and waitlists. The previous system, with roots stretching back nearly four decades, was struggling
to keep up with modern demand. Between June 2025 and June 2026, a staggering 89% of the 65.08 crore reserved tickets were booked online. This massive shift to digital channels frequently overwhelmed the legacy infrastructure, especially during high-traffic periods like the Tatkal window, leading to slow loading times, payment failures, and system crashes—common frustrations for millions of users. The old system could handle around 32,000 bookings per minute, a number that has become insufficient for a rapidly digitising India.
The August 2026 Rollout
In response to these challenges, Indian Railways, through the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS), has developed a next-generation, cloud-based PRS. The rollout is not a sudden switch but a carefully managed phased migration that began in August 2026. This means that trains are being moved to the new system gradually. Officials have stated the transition will involve extensive load-based testing to ensure stability before the old system is fully retired. This cautious approach aims to minimise disruption for passengers who rely on the service around the clock. The IRCTC beta website, which went live in July 2026, is part of this transition, giving users a first glimpse of the new, more user-friendly interface.
A Quantum Leap in Capacity
The most significant improvement is the sheer scale of the new platform. The upgraded PRS is designed to handle over 1.5 lakh ticket bookings per minute, a nearly five-fold increase from the current capacity of 32,000. The system's ability to handle passenger enquiries is also set for a tenfold jump, from 4 lakh to over 40 lakh enquiries per minute. This massive boost in processing power is expected to make the booking experience, particularly during the stressful Tatkal hours, much smoother and more reliable. The goal is to eliminate the dreaded 'please try again' messages and ensure the platform remains stable even when millions of users log in simultaneously.
New Features and a Better Experience
Beyond speed and stability, the upgrade brings several user-centric features. The new platform will feature a multilingual and simplified interface designed to be more intuitive for all users, including enhanced options for Divyangjan, students, and patients. The redesigned website and integrated apps aim to provide a faster search and booking process with fewer steps. Furthermore, CRIS is integrating modern technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML). One immediate benefit is the AI-based waitlist confirmation prediction system, which has reportedly improved its accuracy, helping passengers make more informed travel decisions.
