From Pet Owners to Pet Parents
The single biggest driver of the pet care boom is a profound cultural shift: pets are now widely seen as integral family members, not just animals. This 'pet humanization' trend means that owners, who increasingly identify as 'pet parents', are willing
to spend more on ensuring their companions have a high quality of life. This emotional bond is fuelling demand for premium products and specialized services. The number of pets in Indian households has surged, growing from around 26 million in 2019 to over 39 million by 2025. This growth, especially prominent among Millennial and Gen Z demographics who are often first-time pet parents, is reshaping the market. These digitally-native consumers are more aware of global trends in pet wellness and are actively seeking out the best for their furry family members.
The Boom in Non-Metro Markets
While Bengaluru, Delhi, and Hyderabad remain the largest markets by volume, the most explosive growth is happening elsewhere. Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities are now considered the primary engines of the pet care economy. According to one report analyzing online orders, non-metro markets saw a staggering 96% year-on-year growth in pet care spending. Cities like Guwahati, Meerut, Madurai, and Patna are recording triple-digit growth in pet care orders, far outpacing the metros. This surge is powered by rising disposable incomes, urban expansion, and the increasing prevalence of nuclear families seeking companionship. Entrepreneurs and major brands are taking note, recognizing that quality nutrition, healthcare, and services must be accessible beyond the top-tier cities.
Beyond Just Food and Vet Visits
The diversification of demand is most visible in the types of services and products gaining traction. The market is moving well beyond essentials like packaged food and routine vaccinations. Today's pet parents are spending on a wide array of offerings that mirror human wellness trends. This includes premium nutrition like grain-free and wet foods, which have seen growth of over 150% and now make up a significant portion of food sales. The grooming category has also become mainstream, with searches for products like dog shampoo surging nearly 600% on some platforms. Other growing service segments include professional grooming salons, pet spas, daycare and boarding facilities, and even behavioural training.
The New Business Landscape
This evolving demand has created a dynamic and competitive business landscape. India's pet care market, valued at over USD 3.6 billion in 2024, is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of around 20%. This has attracted major FMCG players like Nestlé, Godrej, and Reliance Retail, who are now competing with established international brands and a vibrant ecosystem of homegrown startups. E-commerce has been a game-changer, with platforms like Amazon and specialized D2C brands such as Supertails and Heads Up For Tails making a wide range of products accessible across the country. This online expansion is crucial for reaching consumers in smaller cities where physical retail options may still be limited.
What's Next for Pet Care in India?
The future of pet care in India points toward even greater specialization and convenience. We can expect to see a rise in tech-integrated solutions, such as apps for booking grooming appointments or tele-consultations with veterinarians. The demand for pet insurance is also an emerging trend, offering financial security for healthcare needs. As access to services improves in Tier 2 and 3 cities, the gap between metros and the rest of the country will continue to shrink. The focus will be on building a comprehensive ecosystem that includes not just products, but also advanced diagnostics, emergency veterinary services, and wellness centres, making high-quality, holistic care a reality for pet parents everywhere.
