Why Some Moisturisers Feel Sticky
The feeling of a sticky or tacky layer on your skin is often due to a combination of product formulation and climate. In high humidity, common in much of India, certain ingredients that are designed to draw moisture from the air (humectants) can feel heavy.
[2, 17] Greasiness can also result from moisturisers that are too thick or occlusive for your skin type, creating a film that doesn't absorb properly. [24, 25] Sometimes, the issue is simply using too much product or layering it incorrectly. [25, 29] A greasy feel often means the formula is richer than your skin needs at that moment. [6]
The Formulation: Gel vs. Cream
The most significant choice you can make is the base formulation of your moisturiser. For those prone to sticky-feeling skin, especially in warm climates, gel moisturisers are often the superior choice. [4, 6] Gels are primarily water-based, making them lightweight, cool to the touch, and fast-absorbing. [10, 16] They deliver hydration without adding heavy oils or lipids that can clog pores or feel greasy, which is ideal for oily and combination skin types. [3, 4] Creams, on the other hand, are emulsions of oil and water. They are thicker and contain more emollients and oils to create a protective barrier. [10] While excellent for dry skin or harsh winter conditions, this richness can feel heavy and lead to shine in humid weather or on oily skin. [4, 6]
Hero Ingredients for a Lightweight Feel
When scanning the ingredient list, look for names that promise hydration without the weight. Hyaluronic Acid is a star humectant, famous for holding up to 1,000 times its weight in water, providing a plump, hydrated feel without any greasy residue. [14, 23] Niacinamide, a form of Vitamin B3, is another excellent choice; it helps regulate oil production, strengthen the skin barrier, and improve texture, all while feeling light on the skin. [11, 19] Glycerin is also a powerful moisture-magnet, and when formulated correctly in a lightweight product, it provides effective hydration. [8, 19] These ingredients are often featured in gel and water-based formulas specifically designed for a fresh finish. [15, 21]
What You Might Want to Use Sparingly
If your goal is to avoid stickiness, be mindful of products with high concentrations of heavy occlusives listed at the top of the ingredient list. Ingredients like petrolatum, mineral oil, and heavy butters such as shea and cocoa butter are extremely effective at preventing water loss but can feel heavy or greasy, especially in humid conditions or on oily skin. [17, 21, 26] While these have a definite place in skincare, particularly for very dry or compromised skin, they may not be ideal for daily use in a hot climate if you prefer a matte feel.
Application Makes a Difference
Even the perfect lightweight formula can feel sticky if applied incorrectly. One of the best techniques is to apply your moisturiser to slightly damp skin, for instance, right after cleansing. [2, 26] This allows the humectants in the product to bind to the water already on your skin, enhancing absorption and reducing surface residue. [2] Also, be mindful of the amount. It’s common to use too much product; start with a pea-sized amount and add more only if necessary. [29] Over-application is a primary cause of that tacky feeling because the skin can only absorb so much at once. [26]
