testing, L1 technical support, and data entry are increasingly being automated. AI-powered tools and 'coding agents' can now perform in minutes what used to take an engineer days, leading companies to rethink their workforce size and structure. This automation is causing a decline in demand for roles focused on IT infrastructure and basic data analytics. As a result, the industry's historical link between revenue growth and headcount growth is weakening, marking a structural change in how IT firms operate and scale.
From Coder to AI Collaborator
The narrative isn't one of simple job loss, but of profound job transformation. The future for an IT professional is less about being a lone coder and more about becoming a strategic partner who collaborates with AI. Industry body NASSCOM has warned that as routine coding work disappears, there's a risk of a decline in deep engineering expertise if not managed properly. This means an engineer's value now comes from their ability to use AI tools to achieve higher-value outcomes, moving from mere process execution to intelligent orchestration. This shift requires a workforce that is not just 'AI-proficient' but 'AI-native'—able to use independent judgment that was once gained through years of hands-on-experience with now-automated tasks.
The Dawn of New AI-Centric Roles
While some roles are shrinking, a new ecosystem of jobs is booming. Since 2023, India has seen a significant increase in AI-related roles, with hiring in this domain far outpacing related layoffs. Companies are actively creating new AI-focused leadership positions and entire divisions to steer their strategy. Demand is surging for specialists like AI/ML engineers, data scientists, prompt engineers, AI model trainers, and AI governance experts. These roles command salary premiums of 20% to 35% over traditional software engineering jobs. The market is shifting towards skills-based hiring, where demonstrable AI certifications can be more valuable than a traditional degree. This has created what some analysts call a two-tier labour market: weakening demand for entry-level roles, but a fierce competition for specialised AI talent.
An Industry in Transition
India's leading IT firms, including TCS, Infosys, and Wipro, are responding proactively. They are rejigging their business models, moving away from billing clients based on hours worked and toward outcome-based contracts where fees are tied to performance. This shift is driven by clients who, armed with their own AI tools, are demanding greater productivity for less cost. Simultaneously, these companies are making massive investments in training. Most major Indian IT firms have initiated large-scale programs to train their workforce on generative AI skills. This is complemented by government initiatives like the Skill India Mission and partnerships between tech giants and state governments to build a future-ready talent pool.

The core message from industry leaders is clear: AI is a tool meant to augment human capability, not replace it entirely. The most valuable professionals will be those who can combine technical AI knowledge with deep domain expertise in sectors like finance or healthcare.
