Intense Monsoon Fury in the Hills
The mountains are calling, but they come with a warning this weekend. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast widespread and heavy rainfall for Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand through the middle of the week. These regions are particularly
vulnerable to landslides and flash floods, and recent downpours have already caused significant disruptions. On Saturday, heavy rainfall triggered landslides that blocked over 120 roads in Uttarakhand, including three national highways. In Himachal Pradesh, similar events led to road closures, damage to bridges, and even a house being submerged by a swollen stream in Kinnaur district. Authorities have issued alerts, advising travellers to be extremely cautious, especially on vulnerable hill slopes and near rivers. Travel to popular destinations like Shimla, Kullu, and parts of the Char Dham Yatra route could be severely impacted.
Plains Not Spared from Downpours
Those staying in or travelling across the northern plains are also in for a wet weekend. The IMD has issued alerts for heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds for Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi-NCR, and Uttar Pradesh. This spell of rain is expected to be widespread, with peak intensity likely over the weekend. Residents and travellers should brace for potential waterlogging in low-lying urban areas, which can lead to significant traffic disruptions. Major transport hubs like airports and railway stations may experience delays due to reduced visibility and safety precautions. The active monsoon trough, a key driver of this weather pattern, is ensuring that moisture-laden winds continuously affect the region, promising a prolonged period of rain that could extend into the next week.
The Official Word and Advisories
Weather agencies are urging a high degree of caution. The IMD has issued specific heavy rainfall warnings for northern parts of Haryana and Punjab through July 12. Widespread rain is forecast to continue in Uttarakhand until July 18 and in Himachal Pradesh until July 15. For the Delhi-NCR region, a period of intense rain is expected to last through July 13. These official forecasts highlight a consistent and active monsoon phase across the entire northern belt. Authorities have strongly advised people to monitor weather updates closely, avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall, and steer clear of landslide-prone and flood-sensitive areas. In the hill states, officials are on alert for rising river levels and the potential for flash floods.
Your Weekend Travel Checklist
If travel is unavoidable, preparation is key. Before setting out, check the latest local weather forecast and traffic advisories for your route and destination. Given the risk of landslides and road closures, especially in the hills, inform a friend or family member of your itinerary and expected timeline. Your vehicle and travel bag should be monsoon-ready. Pack essential rain gear, a first-aid kit, a fully charged power bank, and extra food and water. Be prepared for significant delays and have alternative routes in mind. It is crucial to avoid driving through waterlogged streets or underpasses and to never shelter under isolated trees or electricity poles during a thunderstorm. Keep emergency helpline numbers handy. The State Disaster Helpline numbers are 1070 and 1077. Postponing trips to high-risk hill areas until the weather stabilises is the safest option.
