Decoding the Sleep Score
At its core, a sleep score is a single, consolidated number, usually on a scale of 0 to 100, that aims to summarize the quality of your previous night's rest. Think of it as a daily grade for your sleep. Wearable devices like smartwatches and fitness
rings use a suite of sensors to gather data about your body overnight. The most common sensors are an accelerometer, which tracks movement, and a heart rate monitor. This data is then fed into a proprietary algorithm—which differs from brand to brand—to produce your final score. While the exact formulas are secret, they generally evaluate a few key aspects of your sleep to determine that all-important number.
The Key Ingredients of Your Score
Most sleep scores are built on a foundation of several core metrics. First is sleep duration, the total time you spent asleep. Then there's sleep quality, which looks at things like disturbances and restlessness. Your tracker notes how often you wake up, even for moments you don't recall. Many devices also measure your heart rate and, increasingly, heart rate variability (HRV), which can indicate how well your body is recovering from stress. Finally, trackers attempt to classify your sleep stages, estimating how much time you spent in light, deep, and REM sleep. Each of these components—duration, quality, recovery, and stages—is weighted to calculate your overall score.
How Accurate Are These Trackers?
This is the million-dollar question. While trackers are quite good at determining when you are asleep versus awake, their accuracy gets a bit fuzzy when it comes to sleep stages. The gold standard for sleep measurement is polysomnography, a clinical sleep study that monitors brain waves (EEG), eye movements, and muscle activity. Since wearables can't measure brain waves, they rely on proxies like movement and heart rate to estimate which stage you're in. Studies show they are reasonably good at this, but far from perfect. For example, a tracker might misinterpret a period of calm, motionless wakefulness as light sleep, or struggle to differentiate between light and deep sleep. So, while the data is useful, it is not a medical-grade diagnosis.
The Real Limitation: Context is Everything
Perhaps the biggest limitation of any sleep tracker is that it can tell you what happened, but it has no idea why. It can show you that your sleep was fragmented and your heart rate was high, but it doesn't know you had a stressful work deadline, drank coffee too late, or had a noisy neighbour. That context is something only you can provide. A low score might not mean you have a sleep disorder; it could simply reflect a hot bedroom or a late-night heavy meal. This is why becoming overly fixated on a single number can be counterproductive, leading to what some experts call "orthosomnia"—an anxiety about achieving perfect sleep that can, ironically, make sleep worse.
How to Use Your Sleep Score Wisely
Instead of obsessing over a single night's score, experts recommend focusing on trends over weeks or months. Look for patterns. Do you consistently sleep better on days you exercise in the morning? Does your score dip after a couple of glasses of wine? Use the score as a directional guide, not an absolute truth. Some experts even suggest collecting data daily but only reviewing it weekly to get a broader perspective and avoid daily anxiety. Most importantly, learn to pair the data with how you actually feel. If your tracker gives you a low score but you feel rested and energetic, trust your body over the device. The goal is to use the information as a tool for self-awareness, helping you connect your daily habits to your nightly rest.
