Your body is an expert at regulating its temperature, a process called thermoregulation. One of its primary tools is sweat. When you get warm, you perspire, and as that sweat evaporates from your skin, it carries heat away, cooling you down. To fall asleep
and stay asleep, your core body temperature needs to drop slightly. This dip is a crucial signal to your brain that it's time for rest. However, monsoon humidity throws a wrench in this finely tuned system. When the air is already saturated with moisture, your sweat has nowhere to go. It can't evaporate efficiently, so it just sits on your skin, leaving you feeling clammy and overheated. Your body’s natural air conditioner is effectively switched off, preventing your core temperature from dropping and making it much harder to drift off.
The Impact on Your Sleep Quality
This struggle to cool down does more than just cause discomfort; it actively fragments your sleep. Research shows that sleeping in hot, humid conditions disrupts the most restorative stages of sleep. You spend more time awake during the night and get less of the deep slow-wave sleep your body needs for physical repair, and less of the REM sleep that is vital for memory and mood regulation. This is why you can spend a full eight hours in bed during a particularly humid night and still wake up feeling exhausted and irritable. Furthermore, high humidity creates an ideal environment for allergens like mould and dust mites to thrive, which can trigger allergies or respiratory issues that further disturb your sleep.
Take Control of Your Bedroom Air
The most direct way to combat sleep-stealing humidity is to control your bedroom's environment. The ideal indoor humidity for sleeping is between 30% and 50%. A dehumidifier is the most effective tool for this, as it actively pulls moisture from the air. If you use an air conditioner, you're in luck; most AC units also work to dehumidify a room. Using your AC’s “dry mode,” if it has one, is particularly effective. Good ventilation is also key. When it's not raining, open windows to encourage cross-ventilation, especially in the cooler morning hours. Using exhaust fans can also help pull damp air out of your home.
Choose Your Fabrics Wisely
What you sleep on and in makes a significant difference. Heavy, synthetic fabrics like polyester trap heat and moisture, creating a personal microclimate of dampness under the covers. Instead, opt for natural, breathable materials for your sheets, pyjamas, and blankets. Lightweight cotton and linen are excellent choices as they allow for better airflow and wick moisture away from your skin, helping to keep you drier and cooler throughout the night. Consider swapping your heavy duvet for a lighter cotton blanket or even just a top sheet. A waterproof mattress protector can also be a good idea to prevent dampness from seeping into your mattress.
Simple Habits for Cooler Nights
A few adjustments to your evening routine can also promote better sleep during the monsoon. Taking a lukewarm or cool shower before bed can help lower your core body temperature, priming your body for sleep. Avoid intense exercise or heavy meals close to bedtime, as these can raise your body temperature. Stay hydrated throughout the day, but perhaps limit your fluid intake right before you turn in to avoid waking up. Some people find placing bowls of salt in the room can help absorb a small amount of ambient moisture. Finally, keeping your bedroom tidy and decluttered can improve airflow and make the space feel less stuffy.
