Malaysia: Culture, Cityscapes, and Coastlines
Malaysia has extended its visa-free entry for Indian nationals until the end of 2026, making it a top contender for a hassle-free holiday. Indians can stay for up to 30 days for tourism purposes without a visa. However, you must complete the Malaysia Digital
Arrival Card (MDAC) online within three days before your arrival. For a five-day trip, you can immerse yourself in a mix of experiences. Spend the first two days in Kuala Lumpur, exploring the iconic Petronas Towers, the spiritual Batu Caves, and the vibrant markets of Chinatown. For the next two days, take a short flight to the island of Langkawi for its beautiful beaches, cable car ride, and duty-free shopping. Spend your final day back in Kuala Lumpur for last-minute souvenir hunting before flying home. A budget of around ₹3,500 to ₹5,000 per day, excluding flights, is a reasonable estimate for food, local transport, and activities.
Thailand: Temples, Beaches, and Bustling Markets
Thailand remains a perennial favourite for Indian tourists, continuing to offer visa-free entry. From September 15, 2026, the permitted stay for visa-exempt tourists, including Indians, will be 30 days. This is more than enough time for an exciting 5-day journey. A classic itinerary could involve spending two days in Bangkok to visit the magnificent Grand Palace, Wat Arun, and enjoy a river cruise. You can then fly south to Krabi or Phuket for the remaining three days to experience world-class beaches, go island-hopping to places like the Phi Phi Islands, and enjoy water sports. Thailand is also famously affordable. You can comfortably manage on a daily budget of ₹3,000 to ₹4,500 for accommodation, delicious street food, and local travel.
Vietnam: Seamless E-Visas for Scenic Beauty
While not strictly visa-free, Vietnam offers a seamless and efficient e-visa process for Indian citizens, making it an excellent and accessible option. The e-visa allows for a stay of up to 90 days and can be applied for online, with a processing time of just a few working days. This opens up a country known for its stunning natural landscapes and rich history. For a 5-day trip, you could focus on Northern Vietnam. Spend two days exploring the charming chaos of Hanoi's Old Quarter and its beautiful lakes. Then, take an overnight cruise or a day trip to the breathtaking Ha Long Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage site famous for its emerald waters and limestone karsts. Vietnam is one of the most budget-friendly destinations in the region, with daily expenses potentially as low as ₹2,000 to ₹3,000.
Planning Your Budget-Friendly Trip
The key to keeping these trips low-cost is planning ahead. Flights are often the single biggest expense, so booking them a few months in advance can lead to significant savings. When it comes to accommodation, all these countries offer a wide range of options, from budget-friendly hostels and guesthouses to affordable hotels. Eating like a local is not only a great cultural experience but also incredibly cheap. Street food and local eateries offer delicious meals for a fraction of the price of tourist-focused restaurants. For transport within cities, ride-hailing apps like Grab are widely available and often cheaper than traditional taxis. For longer distances, consider budget airlines for inter-city travel or comfortable overnight buses and trains.
