Why Monsoon Weather Wreaks Havoc
The primary challenge during the rainy season is the spike in humidity. High moisture in the air signals your skin's sebaceous glands to produce more oil, or sebum. This excess oil can mix with sweat, dirt, and dead skin cells, creating a perfect environment
for clogged pores and acne breakouts. Furthermore, the constant dampness weakens your skin's natural barrier, making it more vulnerable to bacteria and fungi. This is why issues like fungal infections, eczema flare-ups, and general skin sensitivity become much more common.
Adjust Your Cleansing Strategy
While it might be tempting to wash your face constantly to combat the greasy feeling, overwashing can strip your skin's natural oils, causing it to produce even more sebum in response. Instead, stick to cleansing twice a day with a gentle, pH-balanced cleanser. For those with oily or acne-prone skin, a face wash containing ingredients like salicylic acid or tea tree oil can be particularly effective at keeping pores clear. Some dermatologists even recommend double cleansing in the evening, starting with a cleansing oil to dissolve makeup and excess sebum, followed by a gentle foaming wash to remove any remaining impurities.
Exfoliate, But Gently
Exfoliation is crucial during the monsoon to slough away the buildup of dead skin cells that can contribute to dullness and breakouts. However, aggressive physical scrubbing can cause micro-tears and irritation, especially when the skin barrier is already compromised by humidity. Opt for gentle chemical exfoliants once or twice a week. Products with alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) or beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs) like salicylic acid can effectively clear out pores without being too harsh.
Lighten Up Your Moisturiser
Skipping moisturiser is a common mistake during humid weather, but it's a step you shouldn't miss. When your skin is dehydrated, it can overcompensate by producing more oil. The key is to switch from heavy, oil-based creams to lightweight, non-comedogenic (pore-clogging) formulas. Look for gel-based or water-based moisturisers that contain humectants like hyaluronic acid or glycerin. These ingredients draw moisture into the skin without adding extra grease, leaving your skin feeling hydrated and comfortable.
Don’t Forget Sunscreen, Even on Cloudy Days
It’s a persistent myth that you don’t need sunscreen when it’s cloudy or raining. The reality is that up to 80% of the sun’s harmful UV rays can penetrate through cloud cover. These UVA rays are present year-round and contribute to premature aging, hyperpigmentation, and skin damage. To protect your skin, make it a habit to apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 every single morning. For humid weather, choose a lightweight, gel-based, or water-resistant formula that won’t feel heavy or sticky.
Prevent Fungal Infections and Body Acne
Your face isn’t the only area that needs attention. The warm, damp conditions are ideal for fungal growth, leading to common issues like ringworm and athlete's foot, especially in skin folds like underarms and between the toes. To prevent this, always dry yourself thoroughly after bathing, and change out of damp or sweaty clothes immediately. Wearing loose, breathable cotton clothing can also help. Using an antifungal powder in areas prone to moisture can provide an extra layer of protection.
