A Window to Natural Splendor
The new service features a state-of-the-art Vistadome coach, specially designed to maximize the sightseeing experience. These air-conditioned coaches come equipped with extra-large glass windows, a transparent glass roof, and comfortable, rotatable seats.
This allows passengers to enjoy panoramic, unobstructed views of the lush green valleys, mist-clad mountains, and cascading waterfalls that define the route. The coach is being added to the Madurai-Guruvayur Express, transforming a regular train journey into an immersive natural spectacle.
The Picturesque Ghat Route
The journey's main highlight is the famed Sengottai-Punalur ghat section, a stretch renowned for its stunning natural beauty. As the train navigates this historic metre-gauge line, now converted for broader service, passengers will pass through numerous tunnels and cross several old bridges, offering a glimpse into the engineering marvels of the past. The route, which includes the scenic Aryankavu pass, connects the temple city of Madurai in Tamil Nadu with Guruvayur in Kerala, making it a significant journey for both tourists and pilgrims.
Schedule and Trial Period
This scenic service is being offered on a trial basis to gauge passenger interest. From Madurai, the Vistadome coach (attached to Train No. 16327) will operate four days a week: on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. This trial period for departures from Madurai is scheduled to run from October 22, 2026, until January 15, 2027. For the return journey from Guruvayur (Train No. 16328), the service will be available on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays, starting from October 23, 2026, and ending on January 16, 2027.
How to Book Your Scenic Seat
Those eager to experience this journey can book their seats in advance, as bookings are now open. The Vistadome coach is classified as an 'Executive AC Chair Car' (EV) in the Indian Railways booking system, such as the IRCTC website or mobile app. Passengers should specifically look for this category when making a reservation. According to Southern Railway, the basic fare starts at Rs 515, though the final ticket price will vary depending on the distance traveled, with a full end-to-end journey from Madurai to Guruvayur costing approximately Rs 1,875. Given the unique nature of the coach, demand is expected to be high, so early booking is recommended.
A Boost for Regional Tourism
The introduction of Tamil Nadu's first Vistadome coach is seen as a major step forward for regional tourism. It provides a new attraction for travelers exploring the cultural and natural heritage of both Tamil Nadu and Kerala. By offering a comfortable and visually stunning way to traverse the Western Ghats, the service aims to attract not just pilgrims but also families, nature lovers, and photography enthusiasts. The trial period, which coincides with the peak tourist and festive season, will be crucial in determining the long-term future of this panoramic rail experience.
