The traditional path to a space career was linear and predictable: excel in engineering, clear the highly competitive Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) exams, and settle into a prestigious, life-long government role. It was a path defined by immense
national pride, but also by public sector hierarchies and pace. That paradigm is being disrupted. Since the government opened up the sector to private enterprise in 2020, the number of space startups has soared from single digits to over 450. Companies like Skyroot Aerospace, Agnikul Cosmos, and Pixxel are now household names, attracting significant venture capital and, crucially, top-tier talent. This shift is creating a parallel ecosystem that is agile, hungry for innovation, and offers a completely different professional experience, with some experienced scientists even migrating from ISRO to these new ventures.
More Than Just Rocket Science
The most significant change is the sheer diversity of roles now available. While aerospace engineers and rocket scientists are still in high demand, the new space economy is much broader. Companies like Pixxel, which is building a constellation of hyperspectral imaging satellites, need data scientists and AI specialists to analyse the terabytes of information they gather. SatSure uses satellite data to provide 'decision intelligence' for agriculture and finance, creating jobs for geospatial analysts and software developers. Startups like Dhruva Space, which offers satellite and ground station solutions, are hiring for roles ranging from radio frequency engineers and software developers to legal associates. This expansion means that a career in the space industry is no longer limited to those with a physics or aeronautics degree; it now beckons coders, data analysts, product managers, and business development professionals.
A New Culture of Work
The work culture within these startups presents a stark contrast to the traditional government setup. Where ISRO offers stability and process, startups offer speed, equity, and a flat organisational structure. The environment is one of rapid prototyping, iterative development, and a high tolerance for risk. This dynamic atmosphere is a major draw for young talent and seasoned experts alike. For many, the opportunity to build new technology from the ground up and have a tangible impact on a company's direction is a powerful incentive. While government pay scales are structured, private companies can offer competitive salaries and, in many cases, lucrative stock options that can lead to significant wealth creation if the company succeeds.
Fuelled by Policy and Capital
This transformation hasn't happened in a vacuum. A deliberate policy shift by the Indian government has been the primary catalyst. The establishment of the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) in 2020 created a single-window agency to promote, authorise, and supervise private space activities. IN-SPACe facilitates access to ISRO's facilities, enables technology transfers, and provides regulatory clarity, significantly lowering the barrier to entry for new companies. This supportive policy environment has unlocked a flood of private capital. In the last three years, Indian space startups have attracted nearly $390 million in funding, with over $150 million raised in 2026 alone. Government-backed initiatives like the Technology Adoption Fund further support startups in commercialising their technologies.
