That helpful grammar checker, AI assistant, or shopping tool you installed is likely not as harmless as it appears. While many extensions provide genuine utility, a significant number operate on a business model where the user's data is the actual product.
Recent security investigations have uncovered a widespread problem: browser add-ons that look legitimate and function as advertised, but secretly harvest your personal information in the background. In one striking example, researchers found 287 Chrome extensions with over 37 million installations were actively leaking user browsing history to more than 30 different third-party companies. These are not just isolated incidents; it's a pattern of behaviour that turns your browser into a surveillance tool. Malicious extensions have been caught stealing passwords, session cookies, and even the content of your emails, often without any warning to the user.
What Data Is Being Secretly Collected?
The scope of data collection can be alarmingly broad. Because extensions operate with deep access inside your browser, they can see sensitive information before it's even encrypted. Studies have found extensions collecting everything from authentication data like passwords and security questions to financial information, including credit card numbers. User activity, such as keystrokes and behavioural patterns, is also a prime target. In some cases, extensions specifically designed to help with AI chatbots for services like ChatGPT or Gemini were found to be collecting the contents of those private conversations. A VPN extension with millions of users, ironically marketed for privacy, was caught logging users' AI chats and sending them to a data broker. This data can then be sold to advertisers, used for user profiling, or exploited for more malicious purposes like identity theft and corporate espionage.

The very technology being used to create more invasive tracking is also being leveraged to fight it. A new category of security tools, often called AI privacy auditing extensions, is emerging to provide a deeper level of analysis. Unlike traditional security software that might rely on known malware signatures, these AI-powered tools can perform behavioural analysis. They analyse an extension's code and its actions in real-time to detect suspicious activities. For example, an AI auditor can flag when an extension that is supposed to be a simple tab manager attempts to access your clipboard or monitor your activity across all websites. These tools are designed to uncover the kind of malicious behaviour that can be hidden inside updates to otherwise legitimate extensions—a common tactic where a trusted add-on turns malicious long after you've installed it.
How You Can Protect Yourself Today
While advanced AI auditing tools are becoming more common in corporate environments, individual users can take several crucial steps to mitigate their risk immediately. The most effective strategy is to be minimalist and vigilant. First, conduct a thorough audit of your currently installed extensions. In your browser's extension settings, remove anything you do not actively use or recognise. Second, before installing any new extension, carefully read the permissions it requests. Be extremely wary of add-ons that ask for broad access, such as the ability to "read and change all your data on the websites you visit." A simple tool should only require minimal permissions.
