The exhausting overnight journey between India's tech and financial capitals is finally getting a high-speed upgrade. Indian Railways has launched the much-awaited Vande Bharat Sleeper, set to slash travel time and redefine comfort.
A Game-Changer for Overnight Travel
On November 1, 2026,
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw flagged off the inaugural Vande Bharat Sleeper Express connecting Bengaluru's Sir M. Visvesvaraya Terminal (SMVT) with Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT). This new service is a significant leap for one of the country's busiest travel corridors. It cuts the journey of roughly 1,118 km down to approximately 16 hours, a massive improvement on the 22 to 24 hours taken by existing express trains like the Udyan Express. The train is designed to be an efficient and comfortable alternative, allowing passengers to board in the evening and arrive at their destination by noon the next day, saving a valuable working day.
Schedule and Key Halts
Regular commercial services will begin from Mumbai on November 2 and from Bengaluru on November 3. Train number 27652 will depart SMVT Bengaluru at 7:45 PM and arrive at CSMT Mumbai at 11:55 AM the next day. The return service, train number 27651, will leave CSMT Mumbai at 8:10 PM and reach SMVT Bengaluru at 12:00 PM the following day. The service will run six days a week, with no service from Bengaluru on Mondays and from Mumbai on Tuesdays. Spanning three states, the train will make eight strategic stops at Anantapur, Guntakal, Raichur, Yadgir, Kalaburagi, Solapur, Pune, and Kalyan, enhancing connectivity for several key towns along the route.
The Onboard Experience: Comfort and Modernity
The 16-coach, fully air-conditioned train can accommodate 823 passengers across three classes: AC First Class, AC 2nd Tier, and AC 3rd Tier. The interiors represent a major upgrade from conventional trains. Coaches feature ergonomically designed, better-cushioned berths, improved soundproofing for a quieter journey, and ambient lighting. Each berth is equipped with individual reading lights and charging sockets. Passenger amenities include automatic doors, CCTV surveillance, bio-vacuum toilets with sensor-based taps, and a passenger information system. The train is also fitted with the advanced KAVACH anti-collision safety system.
Fare Structure and How It Compares
Ticket bookings for the new service have already opened. Fares for the full journey from Bengaluru to Mumbai are set at ₹2,810 for AC 3rd Tier, ₹3,630 for AC 2nd Tier, and ₹4,450 for AC First Class. While these prices are higher than older trains like the Udyan Express, where a 3AC ticket is around ₹1,425, the Vande Bharat Sleeper saves travellers between six and seven hours. Compared to last minute flights, which can cost anywhere from ₹8,500 to over ₹10,000, the train offers a significantly more economical and less stressful option, especially when factoring in airport travel and check in times. This positions the Vande Bharat Sleeper as an attractive middle ground for both business and leisure travellers.
