volatile organic compounds (VOCs) like benzene and formaldehyde from a small, sealed chamber. The study was a sensation, and for decades, it has been the primary evidence cited by wellness blogs and plant shops promoting the air-purifying powers of greenery.
A Modern Reality Check
The problem, as more recent analysis points out, is that our homes and offices are nothing like a sealed chamber in a NASA lab. A pivotal 2019 review published in the Journal of Exposure Science and Environmental Epidemiology re-examined decades of this research and came to a sobering conclusion. Researchers found that the rate at which plants clean the air is incredibly slow compared to a building's natural ventilation—the simple process of air moving in and out through windows, doors, and HVAC systems. This air exchange dilutes pollutants much faster than a plant can absorb them, rendering the plant's effect almost negligible in a real-world setting.
Just How Many Plants Would It Take?
To put it in perspective, the 2019 Drexel University study calculated what it would take for plants to meaningfully impact a room's air quality. The numbers are staggering. To compete with the natural air exchange of a typical room, you would need to place between 10 and 1,000 plants for every square meter of floor space. For a modest 150-square-foot room, that would mean installing hundreds, if not thousands, of plants. It’s a literal indoor jungle that is simply impractical for the average person. While some older advice suggested one or two plants per 100 square feet, modern analysis shows this is nowhere near enough to make a significant difference in removing VOCs.
So, Are Plants Pointless?
Absolutely not. While they may not be the air-purifying powerhouses we once thought, houseplants have numerous other scientifically-backed benefits. Studies have shown that interacting with indoor plants can reduce stress, lower heart rates, improve mood, and boost concentration. They add beauty, life, and a vital connection to nature within our indoor spaces. The simple act of caring for a plant can be a rewarding, mindful practice. So, you shouldn't get rid of your fiddle-leaf fig. You just need to reframe its job description: it's there for your mental wellbeing and aesthetic enjoyment, not as a high-tech air filter.
What Actually Works for Cleaner Air
