Imagine gliding through the misty Western Ghats, with panoramic views of lush valleys and winding tracks unfolding around you. This premium travel experience is now a reality between Tamil Nadu and Kerala, thanks to the Vistadome coach.
A Window Seat Like No Other
The Executive AC
Vistadome coach is designed for one purpose: to immerse you in the surrounding scenery. These modern, German-designed LHB coaches feature massive glass windows that offer an uninterrupted view of the landscape. But the star attraction is the transparent glass roof, allowing you to gaze at the sky and the green canopy above. Inside, the experience is just as premium. The coach is equipped with seats that can rotate 180 degrees, so you can always face the direction of the best view, regardless of the train's movement. Each seat also has its own mobile charging socket. For added convenience, the coach features an observation lounge for a wider perspective, automatic sliding doors, and Wi-Fi-based passenger information systems.
The Scenic Madurai-Guruvayur Route
The Vistadome service connecting the two states operates on the Madurai-Guruvayur Express (Train No. 16327/16328). This makes it the first train service with a Vistadome coach to operate through Kerala. The true highlight of this journey is the spectacular Sengottai-Punalur ghat section, which cuts through the Western Ghats. The train navigates the stunning Aryankavu Pass, offering passengers a front-row seat to the region's natural splendour. This route is renowned for its dense forests, dramatic mountain vistas, and charming small stations, making the Vistadome coach the perfect way to experience it. The service has been introduced as a trial run, so it's best to check availability for your travel dates.
Schedule and Days of Operation
It's important to note that the Vistadome coach is not available on this train every day. For Train No. 16327 from Madurai towards Guruvayur, the service runs on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. In the return direction, for Train No. 16328 from Guruvayur towards Madurai, the coach is available on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays. The train departs Madurai Junction at 11:35 a.m. and reaches Kollam in Kerala around 7:35 p.m., passing through Sengottai, Punalur, and Kottarakara. The numerous stops in the ghat section are deliberately scheduled to be brief, allowing passengers to fully absorb the scenic beauty without long interruptions.

Tips for the Best Experience
To make the most of your Vistadome journey, a little planning goes a long way. First, book your tickets well in advance. With only one Vistadome coach per train and high demand for this unique experience, seats fill up fast. Second, the journey is especially breathtaking during and just after the monsoon season, when the Western Ghats are at their greenest and waterfalls are in full flow. While all seats offer great views thanks to the large windows, the rotatable seats give you flexibility. Don't forget your camera, as you'll pass through some of the most photogenic railway sections in South India. Pack some snacks and water for the ride, and settle in for a truly memorable travel experience that combines the comfort of train travel with the thrill of sightseeing.
