More Than Just a Role
Taking on the character of Lord Ram, a figure revered by billions, is a monumental task that comes with immense pressure and expectation. Director Nitesh Tiwari, known for his meticulous filmmaking, chose Ranbir Kapoor because he believed the actor could
convey the deep nuances of the character. According to Tiwari, Lord Ram was a man of few words whose pain could be felt, not just seen, and whose courage required a significant physical presence. Kapoor himself acknowledged the weight of the role, stating that understanding the philosophy of Lord Ram was far more important than any superficial transformation. He has called it one of the most significant challenges of his career, aiming for a portrayal that is simple, uncomplicated, and relatable to audiences of all ages.
Crafting a Godlike Physique
To physically embody a warrior prince, Kapoor committed to a punishing and diverse fitness regimen. His training, often lasting three to four hours daily, was a holistic blend of strength, endurance, and flexibility exercises. His coaches shared glimpses of intense workouts that included everything from advanced callisthenics and clap pull-ups to kettlebell conditioning and battle ropes. This functional training was designed not just for aesthetics but to build the power and agility befitting the character. The routine also extended beyond the gym, with outdoor activities like running, hiking across challenging terrains, and cycling forming a core part of his endurance training. Swimming was incorporated as a low-impact, full-body workout that aided in recovery and built stamina.
A Disciplined Diet and Lifestyle
Kapoor's transformation was fueled by a radical change in his personal habits. He reportedly quit smoking and drinking alcohol to bring a new level of discipline to his routine. Furthermore, he adopted a strict vegetarian diet, a significant shift intended to align himself more closely with the sattvic lifestyle associated with the role. This clean eating, combined with his intense training, was crucial for achieving the lean, powerful physique required. The actor’s commitment demonstrates a discipline that transcended the film set and became a core part of his daily life, reflecting a deep respect for the character he was set to portray.
The Mental and Spiritual Grounding
For Kapoor, the internal preparation was the most critical component. He emphasized that the physical aspect of preparing for a role is relatively straightforward compared to understanding a character's soul. To connect with the teachings of Lord Ram, he dedicated himself to a two-year journey of spiritual practice. This included extensive reading of religious texts, consulting with scholars, and working closely with a guru named Suvir for hours of meditation. Celebrity trainer Shivohaam also noted that an expert was brought in to teach Kapoor correct posture and how to carry himself, ensuring that the calmness of Lord Ram was reflected in his physical presence. Kapoor also focused on voice modulation and dialogue delivery, aiming to perfect every facet of his performance.
