Understand the Right Visa Category
One of the most common and damaging mistakes is travelling on the wrong type of visa. A tourist and visitor visa is strictly for tourism, visiting family, or attending unpaid social events. It is illegal to work on a tourist visa, and the consequences
are severe, including deportation, fines, and being barred from re-entering the country for years or even for life. For employment, you need a specific work visa or permit. Popular options for Indians include the H-1B visa for the US, the Skilled Worker visa for the UK, and various work permits for Canada. Applying for a tourist visa with the intention of finding a job once you arrive is a violation of immigration laws and a major red flag for authorities.
Verify Your Job Offer and Sponsor
A legitimate job offer is the foundation of a work visa. Before committing, verify that your employer is licensed by the host country's government to hire foreign nationals. For instance, a UK employer must be on the Home Office's approved list of sponsors and provide you with a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS). Similarly, for many jobs in Canada, your employer may need a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA). In the UAE, you can use official government portals like the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE) to check the validity of a work permit and your employer's details online. Be wary of fraudulent recruiters who may provide fake offer letters or visas.
Scrutinise Visa Details and Conditions
Once your visa is approved, the work isn't over. You must carefully read and understand all the conditions attached to it. A work visa is often employer-specific, meaning you cannot legally work for any other company. The visa will also specify the duration of your stay, your job title, and potentially the location where you are permitted to work. Check the validity dates to ensure you know when it expires and what the process is for extension or applying for residency, if that is your long-term goal. Mismatches between your offer letter and the details on the visa are a major warning sign that something is wrong.
Prepare All Necessary Documents Correctly
Incomplete, inconsistent, or incorrect documentation is a primary reason for visa rejections. A typical application requires a valid passport with at least six months of validity, recent photographs meeting specific guidelines, and a completed application form without errors. You will also need to provide proof of qualifications, letters of experience from previous employers, and proof of financial stability. Many countries, like the UK, also require proof of English language proficiency. Ensure there are no inconsistencies across your forms, such as different addresses or employment dates, as this can raise red flags for visa officers.
Beware of Country-Specific Requirements
Visa rules are not universal; they vary significantly from one country to another. For example, the UK's Skilled Worker visa has specific salary thresholds and skill-level requirements (RQF Level 3 or above). Canada has multiple pathways, including the Express Entry system and the International Experience Canada (IEC) program, each with its own criteria. Some countries may also require a medical examination or a police clearance certificate. Researching the specific requirements for your destination country is essential. Using official government websites and embassy resources is the most reliable way to get accurate and up-to-date information.
