From a Bed to a Hub
The role of accommodation in travel has fundamentally changed for India's younger generation. A hotel room used to be a simple utility: a place to sleep and store your luggage between sightseeing tours. Now, it's often the main event. According to a recent
Airbnb report, three in four young Indian travellers believe who they travel with is more important than where they go. This mindset shifts the focus inward, transforming the place you stay from a sterile hotel room into the central hub of the entire experience. More than half now prefer a single shared home over separate hotel rooms for group trips, recognising that the real magic happens in shared kitchens, common living rooms, and late-night chats on the terrace.
The Social World of Hostels
Hostels are no longer just the domain of solo backpackers on a shoestring budget; they have become vibrant social centres for groups. Modern Indian hostel chains have transformed the concept from basic dormitories into stylish, experience-driven spaces. These hostels are designed for interaction, featuring lively common areas, game rooms, and organised activities like city walks, movie nights, or cooking classes. For a group of friends, this environment provides a perfect blend of affordability and community. It allows them to book a block of beds or a private dorm, maintaining their group identity while also getting the chance to meet other travellers, share stories, and make new connections. This social atmosphere is something traditional hotels, with their focus on individual privacy, often cannot replicate.
The Rise of the Private Villa
On the other end of the spectrum is the booming trend of renting private villas and large homestays. This option offers groups complete privacy and control over their environment, creating a true 'home away from home'. For multi-generational families or groups of friends celebrating a milestone, a villa provides a shared space to cook, dine, and relax together without the fragmentation of separate hotel rooms. Locations near major cities like Alibaug and Lonavala have become hotspots for these weekend getaways. The economics are also compelling; when the cost is split among a group, a luxurious villa with a private pool and garden can often be more affordable per person than booking multiple high-end hotel rooms.
Designing for Togetherness
This shift is not just about choosing a different type of building; it's about seeking out spaces designed specifically to foster connection. Travellers are increasingly looking for unique stays that have character and offer more than just a bed. Many modern hostels and villa rentals are curated with group dynamics in mind. Think large dining tables for communal meals, bonfire pits for evening gatherings, and living rooms stocked with board games. Some even offer bespoke experiences like a private chef or curated local tours. This focus on the stay itself is so pronounced that over 60% of Gen Z travellers have chosen a destination specifically because of an interesting accommodation they found there, not the other way around.
