A New Map for the Pet Economy
For years, the Indian pet care market was a predictable landscape dominated by major metropolitan hubs like Bengaluru, Delhi, and Mumbai. This is where you’d find the highest concentration of specialty stores, premium brands, and grooming services. But
that map is being redrawn. While metros remain the largest markets overall, the most explosive growth is now happening elsewhere. Recent data reveals that Tier-II and smaller cities are outpacing their larger counterparts, with a staggering 96% year-on-year growth in pet care orders reported by some quick commerce platforms. Cities like Guwahati, Meerut, Madurai, and Dehradun are emerging as the new frontiers of pet spending, indicating that the trend of treating pets as cherished family members has gone mainstream across the country. This expansion points to a deeper story about rising incomes, changing lifestyles, and new access to products beyond the big-city bubble.
What's Driving the Small-Town Surge?
Several factors are fuelling this non-metro boom. A primary driver is the rising disposable income and the concurrent growth of nuclear families. With more purchasing power and smaller household units, families are increasingly open to pet adoption for companionship and emotional support. This cultural shift, often called 'pet humanization', means pets are seen less as animals and more as integral family members deserving of high-quality care. Consequently, spending has moved far beyond basic food. Furthermore, the pandemic accelerated pet adoption across the country, with a new generation of first-time owners, primarily Millennials and Gen Z, leading the charge. These digitally-native consumers are more informed about pet wellness, actively seeking out products and services that were previously considered niche.
From Basic Kibble to Premium Care
The new pet parent in a Tier-II city is no longer limited to home-cooked meals or basic necessities. The demand is rapidly moving towards premiumisation. There's a notable surge in sales for specialised products like grain-free and organic pet food, breed-specific nutrition, and wellness supplements. Grooming is another high-growth area, with searches for items like dog shampoo skyrocketing nearly 600% on some platforms. This shift is also visible in spending on treats, toys, and accessories, which are becoming a significant part of the monthly pet budget. Price-conscious consumers in these emerging markets are finding value in economy-range products, but the aspiration for premium goods is undeniable, creating a diverse and dynamic market.
The E-Commerce Revolution
This entire trend would be impossible without the deep penetration of e-commerce. Online retail, especially quick commerce, has been a game-changer, democratizing access to a wide variety of pet care products that were once exclusive to physical stores in metros. Platforms like Flipkart have reported over 50% year-on-year growth in the category, with a significant portion driven by demand from non-metro areas. E-commerce gives consumers in smaller towns the ability to discover, compare, and purchase from a vast catalogue of national and international brands. This digital access, combined with the influence of social media, has educated a new wave of pet parents and empowered them to make informed choices, effectively breaking down the geographic barriers that once defined the industry.
