Gujarat's Answer to the Hills
For decades, Saputara has held the title of Gujarat's one and only hill station. Nestled in the Dang district at an altitude of about 1,000 metres, it offers a refreshing break from the plains. Unlike the state's largely arid landscape, Saputara is a canvas
of rolling green hills, a serene lake, and misty weather, especially during the monsoon. It was developed post-Independence, giving it a distinctly Indian feel, free from the colonial hangover of many other popular hill stations. This planned resort has long been a favourite for families from Gujarat and neighbouring Maharashtra, but a renewed interest in its deeper cultural offerings is bringing it to the forefront of the national travel conversation.
The 'Culture' in Hill-Culture
What truly sets this region apart is its rich Adivasi heritage. The Dang district is home to vibrant tribal communities like the Bhils, Warlis, and Gamits. This isn't just a scenic escape; it's a cultural immersion. The name Saputara itself means 'Abode of Serpents', a name derived from the Sarpaganga river where local tribes worship a snake image during festivals. To connect with this heritage, visitors can explore the Saputara Tribal Museum, which displays a fascinating collection of ornaments, musical instruments, and daily artefacts. The nearby Artist Village offers a chance to see and even try your hand at traditional crafts like Warli painting and bamboo art, making for a souvenir with a story.
An Itinerary for Everyone
Saputara is well-equipped to entertain every kind of traveller. The heart of the town is Saputara Lake, perfect for a leisurely boat ride. For panoramic views of the valley, you can take a ride on the Pushpak Ropeway, which connects the main town to Sunset Point. Adventure seekers can find numerous trekking trails leading to viewpoints like Governor's Hill (also known as Table Point). During the monsoon, the entire region comes alive, and a short drive to the Gira Waterfalls becomes a must-do, as the cascade swells to a powerful and impressive sight. From gardens like the Step Garden and Rose Garden for a quiet stroll to adventure sports for a dose of adrenaline, the hill station packs a surprising amount into its small area.
Meet Don, The Emerging Star
If Saputara is the established favourite, then Don Hill Station is the exciting newcomer. Also located in the Dang district, Don is even higher than Saputara and offers a more rustic, off-the-grid experience. Named after the guru Dronacharya, this village is home to a small tribal population of around 1,200. The infrastructure here is minimal, which is precisely its charm for those looking to disconnect. It's a place for raw, natural beauty, with breathtaking 360-degree views of the Sahyadri range, especially during the monsoon when it transforms into a green paradise. While you might not find resorts and boating clubs, you will find immense peace and a glimpse into a way of life that remains deeply connected to nature. Many travellers choose to stay in Saputara and make a day trip to experience Don's untouched beauty.
Planning Your Hillside Escape
The best time to experience Gujarat's hills is during the monsoon (July to September) and the winter months (October to February). During the monsoon, the landscape is at its most vibrant and lush, with mist rolling through the hills and waterfalls in full flow. Winter offers cool, pleasant weather perfect for sightseeing and outdoor activities. Saputara is well-connected by road, with the nearest major cities being Surat (around 160 km) and Nashik (around 80 km). You can find a wide range of accommodation in Saputara, from government-run hotels to private resorts. For Don, it is advisable to bring your own food and water, as amenities are scarce. Remember to wear comfortable walking shoes and always respect the local customs and traditions of the tribal communities you encounter.
