From Price Tags to Experience Checklists
There was a time when the perfect hotel stay was defined almost exclusively by its affordability and proximity to a landmark or business district. Travellers would meticulously compare prices, scrutinise maps, and then make a choice. While these factors
remain important, they are no longer the undisputed kings of decision-making. Today, the Indian traveller is shifting from a purely functional mindset to an experiential one. Recent reports indicate that consumer spending on experiences like travel and hotels is growing faster than spending on physical goods, a trend significantly accelerated in recent years. The hotel is no longer just a basecamp for exploring a city; it has become a central part of the holiday experience itself. This evolution is most visible in the digital tools we use to plan our trips: the humble booking filters.
The Anatomy of a Modern Booking
Online travel platforms have become a battleground for amenities. According to a May 2026 analysis of booking behaviour by travel platform Agoda, Indian users are among the most deliberate in Asia when it comes to selecting their stay. While accommodation type remains a top filter, it is closely followed by a host of service-related details. The filter for 'breakfast-inclusive' stays is one of the most used, accounting for 14% of filter activity, highlighting a demand for convenience and value. Equally important are guest reviews, with a significant number of travellers filtering for properties with high ratings. Beyond the basics, amenities that promise comfort and relaxation, such as swimming pools and bathtubs, are frequently selected. Furthermore, flexibility is non-negotiable for many; filters for 'free cancellation' and 'pay-at-hotel' options rank among the most popular, reducing financial risk in an era of spontaneous planning.
Meet the New Indian Traveller
So, what’s driving this granular approach to booking? It's a combination of economic growth and a profound cultural shift. Rising per capita incomes over the last decade have given many Indians more disposable income, allowing them to prioritise quality and comfort over pure cost savings. This is especially true for younger generations like Gen Z and millennials, who view travel as an integral part of their lifestyle. This demographic, armed with smartphones and influenced by social media, demands stays that are not just comfortable but also visually appealing and shareable. They seek personalised service that feels authentic, not corporate, and wellness features that help them relax and recharge. The post-pandemic world has also amplified a desire for relaxation and curated experiences, driving the popularity of wellness retreats, staycations, and shorter, more frequent luxury breaks.
Niche is the New Mainstream
The focus on specific needs has pushed once-niche filters into the spotlight. A prime example is the explosive growth of 'pet-friendly' travel. As more Indians adopt pets and view them as family members, leaving them behind is no longer an option. MakeMyTrip reported a double-digit increase in bookings for pet-friendly properties in the first quarter of 2026 alone, with the supply of such hotels and homestays growing by over 40%. Another socially significant filter is 'couple-friendly'. This tag provides a discreet assurance for unmarried couples, simplifying their booking process and reflecting a broader social evolution. These filters demonstrate that travellers are not just looking for a generic room; they are seeking accommodations that understand and cater to their specific life circumstances and values.
The Ripple Effect on the Hotel Industry
This shift in consumer behaviour is forcing the hospitality industry to adapt quickly. Hotels are realising that amenities are no longer just extras; they are essential infrastructure for a good stay and a key driver of repeat business. A property might have the best location, but if it lacks reliable Wi-Fi for a business traveller or a clean pool for a family, it risks losing out. To stay competitive, hotels must now meticulously list every service and facility on booking platforms, as visibility is directly tied to how well they match a user's filtered search. This has also spurred the rise of 'lifestyle hotels'—properties designed around a specific theme or experience, from wellness to high-tech convenience, created to meet the demands of the modern Indian guest.
