Establish a Clear Budget
Before you get swept away by glittering designs, the first step is always financial. Decide on a firm budget. This isn't just about the maximum amount you're willing to spend, but also understanding why you are buying. Is it a small token for a festival,
a larger piece for a wedding, or a long-term investment? Knowing your purpose helps you stick to your budget and choose the right kind of gold, whether it's jewellery, a coin, or a bar. This discipline prevents impulsive buys and ensures your festive purchase doesn’t strain your finances.
Verify Purity: The Hallmark is Non-Negotiable
The purity of gold is its most important attribute. In India, it is mandatory for jewellers to sell hallmarked gold. Since April 1, 2023, every piece of gold jewellery sold must have a 6-digit alphanumeric Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID) code. A complete, modern hallmark consists of three signs: the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) triangular logo, a mark indicating purity (like 22K916 for 22-carat gold), and the 6-digit HUID code. You can instantly verify the authenticity of your purchase by entering this HUID code in the 'Verify HUID' section of the BIS CARE mobile app.
Decode the Price: Making Charges and GST
The final price of gold jewellery is more than just the weight multiplied by the day's gold rate. It includes making charges and Goods and Services Tax (GST). Making charges cover the cost of labour and design and can range from 5% to over 25% of the gold's value. These can be a fixed rate per gram or a percentage of the gold's value. Additionally, a 3% GST is levied on the value of the gold, and a separate 5% GST is applied to the making charges. Always ask for a detailed bill that breaks down these three components: the base gold price, the making charges, and the respective GST amounts.
Don't Hesitate to Negotiate Making Charges
While the price of gold is non-negotiable, making charges are not. This is the component where you have room to bargain, especially with local jewellers. Machine-made jewellery and simpler designs typically have lower making charges (around 6-14%), while intricate, handcrafted pieces command higher rates, sometimes up to 25% or more. Many jewellers are open to negotiation, particularly during festive seasons or for bulk purchases. Don't be shy to ask for a discount on these charges; it’s a common practice and can lead to significant savings.
Consider Physical vs. Digital Gold
While buying physical jewellery is a tradition, consider if it aligns with your primary goal. If your main objective is investment, digital options like Sovereign Gold Bonds (SGBs) or Gold ETFs might be more suitable. SGBs, issued by the government, carry no risk of theft, have no storage costs, and are exempt from GST. They even offer a small annual interest. Physical gold provides the satisfaction of tangible ownership but comes with making charges and storage concerns. For purely investment purposes, SGBs often prove to be a more financially efficient choice.
Insist on a Detailed and Proper Invoice
Your purchase is only truly complete once you have a proper invoice in hand. A legitimate bill serves as proof of ownership and is crucial for any future resale or exchange. Ensure the invoice clearly mentions the details of your purchase: the gold's weight and purity (in carats), a breakdown of making charges, the HUID code, and the GST applied to both the gold value and the making charges. For studded jewellery, make sure the weight of the stones is listed separately from the net weight of the gold.
Plan for Safe Storage
Once you bring your precious purchase home, its safety becomes paramount. Storing large amounts of gold at home carries risks of theft and loss. Bank lockers are a popular and secure option, though they come with annual rent and limited access. Private vault services are also emerging in cities, offering higher security and sometimes 24/7 access. For those who opt for a home safe, choose a high-quality, fireproof model that is securely anchored. Regardless of your choice, consider insuring your high-value jewellery for complete peace of mind.
