The New Visa-Free ETA Scheme
Sri Lanka has rolled out a free Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) scheme for tourists from 40 countries, with India being a key beneficiary. [7] Effective from May 25, 2026, Indian passport holders can get a tourist ETA for up to 30 days without any
visa fee. [17, 18] While the visa itself is free, it's crucial to note that travellers must still apply online for this ETA before their departure. [7] The process is not a traditional visa-on-arrival, but a pre-authorisation that simplifies entry. [5] This policy is designed to boost tourism and makes the island nation a highly attractive short-haul destination. [15]
How It Simplifies Your Travel Plans
The primary benefit of the new system is the removal of both cost and uncertainty. Previously, obtaining an ETA involved a processing fee. [6] While not exorbitant, this fee was a consideration, especially for families or groups. Now, the cost is zero for tourists. [18] More importantly, the application process is entirely online via the official portal, eta.gov.lk. [5] Approvals are typically fast, often processed within 24 to 72 hours, which is perfect for last-minute travel decisions. [5] This eliminates the need for embassy visits or dealing with complex paperwork, turning a multi-day planning process into a task that takes just a few minutes. [6]
What the Free Visa Allows
The free tourist ETA grants a stay of up to 30 days from the date of arrival. [13] A significant advantage is that it comes with a double-entry facility. [10] This means you can enter Sri Lanka, potentially visit another nearby country like the Maldives, and re-enter Sri Lanka within that 30-day validity period without needing a new authorisation. [6] For those who fall in love with the island and wish to stay longer, the visa can be extended for up to six months by applying at the Department of Immigration in Colombo, though extension fees will apply. [14, 23]
Your Pre-Travel Checklist
While the visa process is streamlined, several other requirements remain essential for a smooth journey. Before you fly, ensure you have the following documents ready, as immigration officials may ask for them upon arrival: a passport with at least six months of validity from your date of arrival, a confirmed return or onward flight ticket, and proof of sufficient funds and accommodation for your stay. [3, 6] It is also mandatory to fill out an online Arrival/Departure card within three days of your flight. [3] Lastly, always apply for your ETA on the official government website (eta.gov.lk) to avoid third-party sites that may charge unnecessary service fees. [5]
Planning Your Spontaneous Trip
With the visa hurdle cleared, planning a quick 4-5 day trip from India is incredibly feasible. Major Indian cities like Chennai, Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Delhi offer direct flights to Colombo's Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB). A short trip could include exploring the historic charm of Galle Fort, relaxing on the southern beaches of Bentota or Unawatuna, or even a quick visit to a tea plantation near Kandy if you plan your time well. The ease of entry allows travellers to focus their energy and budget on the actual experience—be it surfing, wildlife spotting in a national park, or indulging in the vibrant local cuisine.
