The annual Diwali migration is in full swing, transforming India's railway stations into a sea of humanity. To manage the immense festive rush, Indian Railways has deployed a series of measures, including special help desks at major terminals.
The Scale of the Festive Migration
Every year,
the days leading up to Diwali and Chhath Puja trigger one of the largest human migrations in the country. Millions of people working in metropolitan hubs and industrial centres journey back to their hometowns to celebrate with family. This mass movement places immense pressure on the Indian Railways network, with platforms at major stations like New Delhi, Anand Vihar, Mumbai, and Ahmedabad witnessing unprecedented footfall. The demand for tickets skyrockets, and regular trains are often fully booked months in advance, leaving many passengers scrambling for alternatives. In response, railway authorities have launched a massive operational drive, scheduling thousands of special train services to accommodate the surge.
More Than Just Information Points
A key component of the crowd management strategy is the deployment of additional staff and special 'May I Help You' booths at busy stations. These help desks are more than just information counters; they are crucial touchpoints for hassled passengers navigating the festive chaos. Staffed by railway personnel and sometimes members of the Railway Protection Force (RPF), these desks assist passengers in locating their trains and platforms, provide updates on special services, and offer guidance on station amenities. They are also vital in aiding senior citizens and passengers who require medical assistance or other special support, ensuring a degree of order amidst the congestion. At some locations, these desks are part of larger, dedicated passenger holding areas designed to provide a comfortable waiting environment before travelers proceed to the platforms.
A Multi-Faceted Strategy for Crowd Control
Help desks are just one element of a broader, multi-pronged approach by Indian Railways to manage the festive rush. To prevent dangerous overcrowding on platforms, authorities have introduced several measures. At some busy stations, the sale of platform tickets has been temporarily suspended to limit the number of non-passengers. A major initiative is the creation of dedicated passenger holding areas, or 'Yatri Suvidha Kendras', outside main station buildings. These cordoned-off zones are equipped with amenities like seating, drinking water, toilets, and ticketing counters, allowing passengers to wait in organised queues before being guided to their platforms when the train arrives. This system is being implemented at major terminals like Udhna and Anand Vihar to streamline passenger flow and enhance safety.
Thousands of Special Services
The backbone of the festive plan is the operation of thousands of additional train trips. Different railway zones have announced extensive schedules of special trains to clear the extra rush. Northern Railway alone has planned more than 6,200 special train trips, a significant increase from the previous year, focusing on highndemand routes from Delhi to destinations in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and West Bengal. Similarly, Central Railway has announced hundreds of special services originating from Mumbai. To cater to passengers without reservations, some zones have also introduced unreserved special trains, allowing travel with tickets purchased from station counters. At Udhna station in Surat, railway officials even introduced an 'unnotified' special service on the spot to accommodate a sudden surge, successfully managing a rush of around 30,000 passengers over one weekend.
Enhanced Security and Monitoring
Ensuring passenger safety is a top priority. Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) personnel have been deployed in higher numbers across major terminals. They are using tools like realtime CCTV monitoring and walkietalkies to manage platform crowds, prevent stampedelike situations, and respond quickly to any incidents. Control rooms are keeping a roundtheclock vigil on platform congestion, enabling the quick dispatch of response teams if crowds cross safety thresholds. These security enhancements, combined with crowd management infrastructure and the tireless work of onground staff, are critical to making the festive journey smoother and safer for everyone.
