Why Humidity Wreaks Havoc
The core challenge during the rainy season is high humidity. When the air is saturated with moisture, it disrupts your skin's natural balance. [7] This environment can trigger an overproduction of sebum (your skin's natural oil), creating a greasy feeling
and a perfect breeding ground for acne-causing bacteria. [8, 13] The mix of sweat, oil, and environmental pollutants can easily clog pores, leading to blackheads, breakouts, and a generally dull appearance. [13, 19] In some cases, the constant dampness can even lead to fungal infections. [8, 11] For those with dry skin, the fluctuating temperatures can still damage the skin barrier, paradoxically leading to dryness and irritation. [3]
Cleanse Thoroughly, But Gently
Cleansing is the first and most crucial step in a monsoon skincare routine. [15] It's important to wash your face twice a day to remove the accumulated grime, sweat, and excess oil. [23] However, resist the temptation to use harsh, stripping cleansers. Over-cleansing can damage your skin's protective barrier, leading to more problems. [3] Instead, opt for a mild, pH-balanced, and soap-free cleanser. [3, 23] For those with oily or acne-prone skin, a face wash containing salicylic acid can be particularly effective at keeping pores clean and managing breakouts. [3, 9, 16]
Exfoliate to Unclog and Brighten
With an increase in dead skin cell buildup during the monsoon, exfoliation becomes key to preventing clogged pores and reviving dull skin. [6, 23] Regular exfoliation helps slough away dead cells, preventing them from trapping oil and bacteria. [2, 6] But moderation is vital; over-exfoliating can irritate the skin. [3] Aim to exfoliate once or twice a week with a gentle product. [2, 20] Chemical exfoliants with Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) and Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHAs) like glycolic or salicylic acid are excellent choices for effectively clearing out pores without harsh scrubbing. [12]
Switch to Lightweight Layers
Heavy creams and rich moisturisers that served you well in winter will likely feel too heavy and greasy in humid weather. [24] This is the perfect time to switch to lighter formulations. [2] Even oily skin needs hydration, as skipping moisturiser can cause the skin to produce even more oil to compensate. [3, 19] Look for water-based or gel-based moisturisers that feel light and absorb quickly. [2, 23] Ingredients like hyaluronic acid are great for providing hydration without the weight, as it attracts and holds moisture in the skin. [16, 17] Niacinamide is another powerhouse ingredient that helps control oil, reduce irritation, and improve skin texture. [3, 16]
Sunscreen Is Still Non-Negotiable
One of the biggest mistakes people make during the monsoon is skipping sunscreen. [4] Don't let the cloudy skies fool you—up to 80% of the sun's harmful UV rays can penetrate through the clouds. [5, 10] These rays are responsible for tanning, premature ageing, and long-term skin damage. [5, 10] In fact, wet surfaces like roads and puddles can reflect UV rays, potentially increasing your exposure. [18] Continue to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 every single day. [5] For the humid climate, look for lightweight, non-comedogenic, or gel-based formulas that won't feel sticky or clog your pores. [3, 18]
