A Game-Changer for Connectivity
The Railway Board has approved the introduction of a new Vande Bharat Express that directly links Surat, the 'Diamond City', with Udaipur, the 'City of Lakes'. This move marks a significant enhancement in rail connectivity between South Gujarat and Southern
Rajasthan. The new train, numbered 26903/26904, is operated and maintained by the Western Railway zone. A key change accompanying this launch is the discontinuation of the previous Udaipur City-Asarva Vande Bharat Express. The route has now been extended to Surat, creating a longer and more impactful connection that serves a wider range of travellers. This is Surat's first originating and terminating Vande Bharat service, a much-anticipated development for the city.
Route, Timings, and Frequency
The Surat-Udaipur Vande Bharat Express will operate six days a week, excluding Tuesdays. Departing from Surat (train no. 26903) at 6:10 AM, it is scheduled to reach Udaipur City at 1:40 PM the same day. For the return journey, the train (no. 26904) will depart from Udaipur City at 3:35 PM and arrive in Surat at 11:00 PM. The train will make nine commercial stops along its journey, enhancing connectivity across several key towns. The designated halts are Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Maninagar, Asarva, Himmatnagar, Shamlaji Road, Dungarpur, and Zawar. The service will utilize an eight-car coach composition for its operations.
Slashing Travel Time Significantly
One of the most significant changes for travellers is the drastic reduction in journey time. The train will cover the approximately 690-kilometre distance in about 7 hours and 30 minutes. This is a substantial improvement compared to road travel, which typically takes 8 to 9 hours, and existing train services that can take over 11 hours. With a maximum permissible speed of 160 kmph, the Vande Bharat offers a faster, more efficient, and reliable travel alternative. This speed advantage is set to make train travel a far more attractive proposition for both business and leisure passengers who previously relied on buses or private vehicles.
Comfort, Features, and Economic Boost
As with all Vande Bharat services, passengers can expect a premium travel experience. The trains are equipped with AC Chair Car and Executive Chair Car classes, featuring comfortable, rotatable airline-style seats, large windows, on-board Wi-Fi and infotainment systems, and high-quality catering. The introduction of this service is poised to deliver a major boost to the economies of both regions. It is expected to stimulate tourism in the popular Mewar-Vagad region of Rajasthan and facilitate smoother business travel to Surat's bustling textile and diamond industries. By providing a faster and more convenient link, the train will encourage more frequent travel, benefiting local hotels, transport providers, and trade.
