The One and Only: Cafu
At the very top of this exclusive list stands one man alone: Marcos Evangelista de Morais, better known as Cafu. The legendary Brazilian right-back is the only player in history to have played in three consecutive World Cup finals. His incredible journey
saw him come on as a substitute in the 1994 final against Italy, which Brazil won on penalties. He then started in the 1998 final, a loss to France in Paris. Finally, as captain in 2002, he led Brazil to victory against Germany in Yokohama, memorably lifting the trophy after a 2-0 win. This feat of appearing in three finals—1994, 1998, and 2002—remains unmatched and cements his legacy as one of the game's most consistent and decorated players.
The Three-Finals Club
While Cafu is the only one to play in three straight finals, a few other titans of the game were part of three World Cup final squads, though they didn't play in all three. This group includes Brazilian icon Pelé and German stalwart Lothar Matthäus. Pelé was a key part of the winning squads in 1958 and 1970, scoring in both finals. He was also part of the 1962 squad that won the tournament, but he was injured earlier in the competition and did not play in the final. Matthäus captained West Germany to victory in 1990 after being on the losing side in the 1982 and 1986 finals. He played in the '86 and '90 finals but was an unused substitute in 1982. Another Brazilian, Ronaldo Nazario, was in the squads for the 1994, 1998, and 2002 finals, but only played in 1998 and 2002.
Argentina's Enduring Icons
Argentina has produced some of the game's greatest talents, and two of them have graced two World Cup finals. Diego Maradona famously led his nation to glory in 1986 against West Germany, and four years later, he captained the side again in a rematch which they lost. Decades later, Lionel Messi accomplished the same feat. He first led Argentina to the final in 2014, where they suffered a heartbreaking extra-time loss to Germany. Eight years later, in what was likely his final World Cup, Messi finally captured the one trophy that had eluded him, leading Argentina to a dramatic penalty shootout victory over France in the 2022 final in Qatar.
The German Powerhouse
No nation has appeared in more World Cup finals than Germany, which has reached the final match eight times. This incredible consistency has resulted in a long list of German players with multiple final appearances. Besides Lothar Matthäus, players like Pierre Littbarski and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge were part of the squads that reached the final in 1982 and 1986 before finally winning in 1990. Franz Beckenbauer played in the 1966 final loss to England and captained West Germany to victory on home soil in 1974. Numerous other German players across different eras, including Rudi Völler and Miroslav Klose, have also played in two finals, showcasing the nation's sustained excellence on the world stage.
Other Legends of the Double
The list of players with two final appearances is filled with legendary names. Zinedine Zidane famously scored two headers to lead France to a dominant victory over Brazil in the 1998 final. He returned to the final in 2006, scoring an early penalty before being infamously sent off for a headbutt in extra time as France lost to Italy. Dutch maestro Johan Cruyff led the Netherlands to the 1974 final, where they lost to West Germany. Several other Brazilians, including Dunga and Nilton Santos, have also appeared in two finals. More recently, French stars like Kylian Mbappé, Hugo Lloris, and Antoine Griezmann played in the victorious 2018 final and the 2022 loss to Argentina.
