Assess the Interest Rate Environment
The Reserve Bank of India's Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) is meeting from October 5-7, and expectations of a repo rate hike are growing. Economists anticipate a potential 25 basis point increase, which would be the first since February 2023. This is driven
by rising inflation, elevated crude oil prices, and a weakening rupee. If rates go up, your floating-rate loans (like home loans) will become more expensive, increasing your EMIs. Conversely, fixed deposit (FD) rates may also rise, making them a more attractive option for savers. Before taking a new loan or renewing an FD, watch the RBI's decision on October 7 closely. Consider if you can prepay a portion of your existing high-cost debt to reduce your interest burden.
Review Your Investment Portfolio
Indian stock markets have been volatile, with the Nifty 50 and Sensex seeing their longest losing streak in 25 years before a small recovery on October 5th. The decline in September was largely driven by global factors, including rising US Treasury yields and high oil prices, which led to significant selling by Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs). Analysts suggest the market may remain under pressure. This is a critical time to review, not react. Check if your asset allocation between equity and debt still aligns with your risk appetite. With market volatility, it’s wise to ensure your portfolio is well-diversified and not overly concentrated in one sector. Now is not the time for panic selling, but for a strategic assessment of your long-term goals.
Plan Your Year-End Tax Savings
With the financial year well past its halfway mark, now is the time to start planning your tax-saving investments, not in a last-minute rush in March. Review your Section 80C limit of ₹1.5 lakh. Popular options include the Public Provident Fund (PPF), Equity Linked Savings Schemes (ELSS), tax-saver FDs, and contributions to the National Pension System (NPS). An ELSS offers both tax benefits and the potential for equity-linked returns, though it comes with market risk and a three-year lock-in. PPF offers tax-free returns and is a lower-risk option. NPS provides an additional deduction of ₹50,000 under Section 80CCD(1B), making it an excellent tool for retirement planning. Assess how much of your 80C limit you have already utilized through mandatory contributions like your Employee Provident Fund (EPF).
Check Your Emergency Fund
Retail inflation in India has been climbing, reaching 4.82% in August. Rising prices mean your daily living costs are increasing, which can erode the value of your savings. An emergency fund, ideally covering 6-12 months of essential expenses, is your primary safety net. Check if your current fund is still adequate to cover these higher costs. If you dipped into it recently or if its value has been diminished by inflation, make a plan to replenish it. This fund should be kept in a liquid, easily accessible account, such as a high-yield savings account or a liquid mutual fund, not in investments that are hard to access quickly.
Budget for Festive Spending
October marks the beginning of the festive season, a time often associated with significant expenses. While celebrating is important, it shouldn't derail your long-term financial goals. Create a specific budget for all your festive spending, from gifts and travel to home renovations. This helps you maintain financial discipline and avoid taking on unnecessary debt, such as high-interest credit card balances. Planning your expenses in advance allows you to enjoy the season without facing financial stress in the new year. If you receive a festive bonus, consider using a portion of it to prepay a loan or increase your investment contributions.
Evaluate Your Insurance Coverage
A year-end financial review is incomplete without checking your insurance policies. Your responsibilities may have changed over the year—perhaps due to a new family member, a bigger loan, or a change in income. Assess if your life insurance sum assured is still sufficient to protect your family's financial future. Similarly, review your health insurance policy to ensure the coverage is adequate, especially with rising medical costs. Check renewal dates and make sure beneficiary details are up to date on all your policies.
