The Main Culprit: It's the Humidity
The simple answer isn't the temperature on the thermometer but the amount of moisture in the air. This is known as humidity. During the monsoon, the air becomes saturated with water vapour. While rain can slightly lower the ambient air temperature, it drastically
increases the relative humidity. This high concentration of moisture in the air is the primary reason you feel so hot and uncomfortable, even when the actual temperature isn't soaring. Humid air fundamentally changes how your body experiences heat.
Your Body's Cooling System Is Jammed
Your body has a natural and very effective air conditioning system: sweating. When you get warm, your body produces sweat. As this sweat evaporates from your skin, it takes heat with it, which cools you down. However, this entire process relies on the surrounding air being able to absorb more moisture. When the relative humidity is high, the air is already nearly full of water vapour. This means your sweat has nowhere to go; it evaporates much more slowly, or not at all. Instead of cooling you, the sweat just sits on your skin, leading to that sticky, clammy feeling and trapping your body heat.
Understanding the 'Real Feel' Temperature
This is why weather reports often mention a 'heat index' or 'real feel' temperature. This measurement combines the actual air temperature with relative humidity to give a more accurate sense of how hot it feels to the human body. For example, an air temperature of 30 degrees Celsius with low humidity might feel perfectly pleasant. But that same 30 degrees with 80% or 90% humidity can feel closer to 40 degrees. Your body isn't just reacting to the heat; it's struggling against the moisture that prevents it from cooling itself efficiently. During a monsoon night, even if the temperature drops to a seemingly comfortable level, the sky-high humidity can keep the 'real feel' temperature uncomfortably high.
Why Nights Don't Always Bring Relief
Even after the sun sets, several factors keep things warm. Materials like concrete and asphalt in urban areas absorb heat all day and radiate it slowly through the night, an effect known as the Urban Heat Island effect. When you combine this stored heat with the high humidity from the monsoon rains and a lack of wind, you get a recipe for a sweltering night. The air inside your room, especially if it's poorly ventilated, can trap this humid, warm air, making it feel even more oppressive than it is outside.
How to Get a More Comfortable Night's Sleep
While you can't change the weather, you can make your room more comfortable. Improving air circulation is key. Use a ceiling or pedestal fan to help evaporate sweat from your skin, even in a humid room. If possible, create a cross-breeze by opening windows on opposite sides of your home. A dehumidifier can work wonders by pulling excess moisture out of the air. Opt for lightweight, breathable cotton sheets and sleepwear, as these materials absorb sweat better than synthetic fabrics. Taking a cool shower before bed can also help lower your core body temperature temporarily, giving you a window to fall asleep more comfortably.
