The Undeniable Iced Coffee Craze
Walk past any cafe in urban India, and you'll see tables dotted with tall glasses of iced coffee. For Gen Z and millennials, it's not just about a caffeine hit; it's an experience. These drinks are customisable, aesthetically pleasing, and a symbol of an aspirational
lifestyle. The trend is fuelled by social media, where a photogenic cold brew or a colourful latte is prime content. This has turned coffee from a simple morning beverage into an affordable, everyday indulgence and a social event. Unlike older generations who may have viewed coffee as a functional necessity, younger consumers see it as a treat, driving a boom in out-of-home coffee consumption.
What's Hiding in Your Cup?
The term "hidden sweeteners" refers to sugars that aren't immediately obvious to the consumer. While you might be mindful of adding a spoonful of sugar yourself, the real culprits are often the pre-made syrups, flavourings, and bases used by cafes. These can include everything from high-fructose corn syrup to various malt, rice, and agave syrups. A single specialty iced coffee can contain a shocking amount of sugar; some popular international chain drinks have been found with over 60 grams of sugar, which is more than two cans of cola. In some extreme cases, a large flavoured frozen coffee can pack as many as 46 teaspoons of sugar. This means a seemingly harmless daily coffee could easily exceed the recommended daily limit for added sugar without the consumer even realising it.
A Generation's Health Awakening
Gen Z is often described as the most health-conscious generation. They are increasingly aware of what they put into their bodies, with wellness becoming a daily practice rather than an afterthought. This focus on health is driving a greater demand for transparency and cleaner ingredients. High sugar consumption is linked to a range of health issues, and recent studies have even suggested a correlation between sugary drinks and increased anxiety in young people. As awareness grows, many young consumers are no longer willing to unknowingly consume high levels of sugar, especially when it's disguised in their favourite drinks. This generation, more than any before, is questioning the ingredients in their food and beverages, seeking out options that align with a healthier lifestyle.
The Push for Transparency and Better Choices
In response to this growing awareness, young consumers are starting to change their habits. This shift is manifesting in several ways. Many are actively seeking out brands that offer low-sugar or sugar-free options. There's a rising interest in functional beverages that offer benefits beyond basic nutrition, such as added protein or adaptogens. Consumers are becoming more adept at reading labels and are demanding clearer information from companies. This has led to a counter-trend of appreciating simpler drinks like black coffee or making customised, healthier versions at home. The demand is clear: young people want to enjoy their coffee, but they want to do so on their own terms, with full knowledge of what they are consuming.
How Coffee Brands Are Responding
The beverage industry is taking note. Many coffee companies are beginning to expand their menus to include healthier alternatives to cater to this discerning demographic. We're seeing a rise in ready-to-drink (RTD) coffees that are explicitly low in sugar or sweetened with natural alternatives like stevia or monk fruit. Some brands are championing coffee with no added sugar at all, relying only on the natural sugars from milk. In response to the demand for customisation without the sugar load, some chains have even removed surcharges for dairy-free milk alternatives, making it easier for consumers to build a drink that fits their preferences. The message from the market is that brands that embrace transparency and offer healthier, innovative products will be best positioned to win the loyalty of young coffee drinkers.
