The Overlooked Vulnerability
The “final kilometre” is the short distance from the bus stop, metro station, or the spot a cab drops you off to your front door. It’s a familiar path, which often breeds a false sense of security. However, this familiarity can be a significant risk.
A YouGov survey revealed that 52% of urban Indian women always or often feel unsafe while walking alone at night. This anxiety is often most acute on these last legs of a journey, which may be poorly lit, deserted, or lack active surveillance. The transition from a crowded public transport system to a quiet residential lane can be jarring. Assailants often look for predictable patterns and moments of distraction—like when you’re fumbling for your keys or engrossed in a phone call. The very feeling of being “almost home” can cause you to lower your guard when you need it most.
Plan Your Entire Journey, Door to Door
A safe commute is one that is planned from start to finish. Before you leave for the day, think about your return trip. If you know you’ll be late, what are your options? Relying on finding an auto-rickshaw on a deserted street at 11 PM is not a plan; it's a gamble. Check the schedule for last-mile connectivity like late-night buses or metro feeder services. If using ride-hailing apps, consider booking your ride before you exit a well-lit station or office. Some services allow you to pre-book a cab, ensuring you aren't left stranded. Discuss your commute plan with family or a trusted friend. A simple message saying, “Just got off the metro, should be home in 15 minutes,” creates a crucial accountability window.
Leverage Technology for Your Safety
Your smartphone is a powerful safety device. Beyond the obvious step of sharing your live location via WhatsApp or Google Maps, a host of personal safety apps are available in India. Apps like bSafe, My Safetipin, and Raksha allow you to send SOS alerts to pre-selected contacts with a single tap. Many can also share your live location, automatically record audio or video, and even sound a loud alarm. Features like My Safetipin’s “Safety Score” can help you assess the safety of a particular area based on user-generated data on lighting, visibility, and public transport access. These apps are designed for discretion and speed, allowing you to send an alert without drawing an assailant's attention. Since many of these apps were developed following the 2012 Nirbhaya case, they are designed with real-world Indian scenarios in mind.
Low-Tech Solutions Are Just as Crucial
Technology can fail, but awareness is always available. One of the most effective safety measures is simply being present and aware of your surroundings. Avoid walking with headphones in both ears or being deeply engrossed in your phone. Keep your head up and make brief eye contact with passersby; it signals that you are alert. If walking, stick to well-lit, populated routes, even if it adds a few minutes to your journey. Identify 'safe spots' along your way—a 24/7 chemist, a security guard's booth, or a well-lit shop—that you can duck into if you feel uneasy. Have your keys ready in your hand before you reach your door to avoid lingering outside. If you feel you are being followed, don't head straight home. Instead, walk to the nearest safe spot and call for help.
Choosing Your Final Ride Wisely
When you need a vehicle for that last stretch, the choice matters. While auto-rickshaws are convenient, their open nature can be a vulnerability at night. App-based services like Ola and Uber offer the advantage of a digital trail, GPS tracking, and the ability to share your ride details. However, always verify that the car and driver match the details in the app before getting in. For an even higher level of security, some corporate cab services offer background-verified chauffeurs trained for late-night safety. If you regularly commute late, consider forming a group with neighbours or colleagues to share a pre-booked, trusted taxi service. The safest option will always depend on your specific location and the time of day, but having multiple pre-vetted options is key.
