The Annual Onam Travel Rush
Every year, the Onam festival triggers a massive movement of people towards Kerala from major cities across India like Chennai, Bengaluru, and Mumbai. This pilgrimage home to celebrate with family leads to an overwhelming demand for train tickets, with regular
services getting fully booked months in advance. Even before special trains are announced, tickets on popular routes often move to long waiting lists within hours of the booking window opening. To manage this incredible surge, Indian Railways announces special train services, which are a lifeline for thousands of passengers but are also snapped up in record time.
First Wave of 2026 Onam Special Trains
Southern Railway has taken the lead by announcing the first set of special weekly trains to handle the festive rush for Onam 2026. One major route is between Mangaluru Central and Chennai Egmore. Train No. 06126 will depart from Mangaluru Central on Mondays from July 13 to August 31, 2026, while Train No. 06125 will run in the return direction from Chennai Egmore on Wednesdays starting July 14. Another key service connects Thiruvananthapuram Central and Tambaram. Train No. 06110 will depart from Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesdays in August and September, with the return service, Train No. 06109, leaving Tambaram on Thursdays. A weekly special between Chennai Central and Kollam (Train No. 06119/06120) has also been announced for Wednesdays and Thursdays in August and September.
Your Booking Strategy: Act Fast
The single most important piece of advice is to book your tickets the moment reservations open. For some of the recently announced specials, advance reservations began at 8:00 AM on July 9, 2026. Waiting even a few hours can be the difference between a confirmed berth and a long waitlist. The Railway Minister has announced that over 100 special services will be operated for Onam to connect various parts of the country to Kerala, but with demand so high, these seats will not last. Keep a close watch on the official websites and social media handles of Indian Railways and respective zones like Southern Railway for announcements.
Tips for a Successful Booking
To improve your chances, be prepared before the booking window opens. Use the IRCTC website or the official Rail Connect app. Ensure your login details are handy and you have a stable internet connection. A crucial time-saver is to create a 'Master List' of passengers in your IRCTC profile beforehand. This allows you to fill in details like name, age, and gender for all travelers with a single click, which is much faster than typing them out manually. If you are booking for a group, be coordinated. If your initial attempt for a direct train fails, consider booking a 'break-journey' ticket, which involves changing trains at a major junction. While less convenient, it can sometimes be a viable way to secure a confirmed travel plan.
What If You Still Miss Out?
If you are unable to secure a confirmed train ticket, don't lose hope entirely. Monitor the ticket status regularly, as confirmed tickets are often cancelled, moving waitlisted passengers up. The 'Tatkal' quota, which opens one day before the train's departure, is a high-demand, higher-priced option for last-minute travel. Beyond trains, state transport corporations in neighboring states often announce special bus services to Kerala to cater to the Onam rush. While train travel is often the preferred mode for long distances, these buses serve as a crucial backup for many. Keep an eye on announcements from transport authorities in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and other nearby states as the festival nears.
