Before You Go: Visas, Flights, and Money
Planning is key for a short trip. For Indian citizens, Sri Lanka offers a free 30-day Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA). You must apply for this online before you travel, as it is not available on arrival. The process is straightforward: visit the
official ETA website, fill in your details, and you'll receive the authorisation, usually within 48 hours. While the ETA is free, you'll still need a passport with at least six months' validity, proof of accommodation, and a confirmed return flight ticket to show at immigration. Booking flights well in advance to Colombo’s Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) is the best way to secure good prices. The currency is the Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR), and it's wise to carry a mix of cash exchanged at the airport and a card for larger payments.
Day 1: Arrival and Kandy's Cultural Heart
Once you land in Colombo, the goal is to get to Kandy efficiently. A pre-booked taxi or a ride from a ride-hailing app is the fastest way, taking about 3-4 hours. Alternatively, you can take a train from Colombo Fort station, a scenic journey that takes around 2.5 to 3 hours. After checking into your guesthouse or hotel, spend the evening exploring the city's main attraction: the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa). This beautiful temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the spiritual heart of the country. Afterwards, take a peaceful stroll around Kandy Lake as the city lights begin to twinkle.
Day 2: The Iconic Train and Journey South
Dedicate your morning to another of Kandy’s highlights. The Royal Botanical Gardens in Peradeniya are a stunning expanse of exotic plants and towering trees. Later, it's time for one of the world's most scenic train rides. Instead of travelling directly to Mirissa, which is a long haul by road or a complex train route, embrace the journey. Take the famous train from Kandy towards Ella. This trip, which can take 6-7 hours, is an experience in itself, winding through lush green tea plantations and misty mountains. You don't need to go all the way to Ella. Get off at a scenic stop like Nuwara Eliya or Hatton and arrange for a pre-booked taxi to drive you the rest of the way to Mirissa (another 4-6 hours). This breaks up the travel and ensures you don’t miss the iconic rail journey.
Day 3: Mirissa's Golden Sands and Sunsets
Wake up to the sound of waves in Mirissa. After a long travel day, Day 3 is all about relaxation. Settle into your beachside accommodation and hit the main Mirissa Beach for some sunbathing and swimming. The vibe here is laid-back and perfect for unwinding. In the late afternoon, make your way to the famous Coconut Tree Hill, a small private grove that offers one of the most Instagrammable sunset views in Sri Lanka. For dinner, the beach shacks come alive, serving fresh seafood caught that day. It's the perfect way to soak in the coastal atmosphere.
Day 4: Whale Watching and Coastal Exploration
If you're visiting between November and April, an early morning whale watching tour is a must-do. Mirissa is one of the best places in the world to spot blue whales. Tours typically last a few hours and return by late morning. In the afternoon, explore more of the coastline. Climb Parrot Rock, a small island accessible by a short walk through the water, for a panoramic view of the bay. You can also take a short tuk-tuk ride to the neighbouring Weligama Beach to watch the stilt fishermen or even try a beginner's surf lesson. End your day at Secret Beach, a quieter, more secluded spot perfect for a final Sri Lankan sunset.
Day 5: One Last Swim and the Journey Home
Enjoy a final Sri Lankan breakfast and perhaps a last quick dip in the ocean. Depending on your flight schedule, you can do some souvenir shopping for local crafts and spices. The journey from Mirissa back to Colombo’s airport is most efficiently done by a pre-booked taxi or via the Southern Expressway bus. The drive takes around 2-3 hours, so be sure to leave plenty of time. This route is much faster than the coastal road and ensures you reach the airport with time to spare for your flight back to India, filled with memories of a whirlwind adventure.
