India's Address in Orbit
By 2035, India aims to have a permanent address in Low Earth Orbit, around 400-450 kilometres above us. This orbiting home and laboratory, named the Bharatiya Antariksh Station, is the next logical step after the Gaganyaan mission, which will send Indian
astronauts into space. The station is planned as a modular structure, weighing around 52 tonnes once fully assembled. ISRO plans to launch the first module, BAS-01, by 2028. This will be a multi-phase project, with additional modules launched over the years to expand its capabilities. It's designed to host three to four astronauts for missions lasting three to six months, allowing for a sustained human presence in space.
A Laboratory in the Sky
One of the primary purposes of a space station is to serve as a unique scientific laboratory. The microgravity environment—a state of near-weightlessness—is impossible to replicate for long periods on Earth. This provides a priceless opportunity for Indian scientists to conduct groundbreaking research in fields like medicine, materials science, and biotechnology.
