code generation, testing, and L1 support. This has prompted a strategic pivot. Companies are no longer focused on simply expanding their workforce; instead, they are selectively hiring for niche skills that deliver higher value. According to recent reports, hiring in the IT sector has slowed overall, but recruitment for AI-specific roles has surged. This reflects a move away from the traditional headcount-based approach to a more agile, skill-focused model where expertise in emerging technologies is the new currency.

As AI redefines job roles, a new hierarchy of skills has emerged. Technical proficiency in areas like machine learning, data science, cloud computing, and cybersecurity is now paramount. These companies are making massive investments in reskilling their existing workforce. TCS, for instance, aims to upskill a significant portion of its employees in AI and related technologies and has seen huge participation in its internal AI hackathons. Similarly, Wipro has centred its talent strategy on retraining employees through its internal intelligence platform. This focus on reskilling comes as fresher hiring targets are being adjusted. While companies are still hiring graduates, the emphasis has shifted from mass intake to recruiting candidates who already possess foundational AI skills, with some firms reducing their overall fresher commitments.
The Challenge of Reskilling at Scale
While the intent to reskill is strong, the challenge is monumental. Upskilling a workforce of millions requires a concerted effort from industry, academia, and the government. Industry body NASSCOM has highlighted a significant gap between the demand for and supply of AI-native talent, noting that while many professionals are 'AI-proficient,' fewer have the deep engineering expertise to be considered 'AI-native'. The automation of routine tasks, which traditionally helped junior engineers build foundational knowledge, means new ways must be found to develop expertise. This has created a talent mismatch, with employers struggling to find applicants with the right blend of practical AI application skills.

The path to career growth is no longer about switching jobs for a pay hike but about acquiring deep, specialised expertise in high-demand areas.
