For decades, India's IT industry was built on a foundation of repeatable, process-driven tasks. The new wave of generative AI is different from previous technological shifts because it automates cognitive work—coding, analysis, writing, and support. This
directly impacts the core functions that have been the bedrock of the industry. However, instead of simply replacing jobs, AI is automating specific tasks within those jobs. For example, an AI can generate code snippets or summarise reports, but it still requires a human to design the system, understand the business context, and make strategic decisions. The result is a slowdown in hiring for traditional entry-level roles focused on routine tasks. Major IT firms are now prioritising efficiency and reskilling their existing workforce over the large-scale volume hiring of the past. This marks a fundamental change in the industry's structure, shifting value away from manual execution and towards strategic oversight.
From Coder to Collaborator: The New Skillset
As AI handles more of the routine technical work, the skills that define a valuable IT professional are changing. The future isn't just about being a great coder; it's about being a great collaborator with AI. This has led to a surge in demand for professionals who possess a hybrid set of skills. Technical proficiency in areas like machine learning, cloud computing, and cybersecurity remains critical and commands significant salary premiums. However, these must now be paired with uniquely human capabilities. There is a growing emphasis on creative and analytical thinking, complex problem-solving, and leadership. Furthermore, new, non-traditional skills are becoming essential. These include AI ethics and governance to ensure responsible deployment, prompt engineering to effectively communicate with AI models, and data storytelling to translate complex data insights into clear business strategies.
New Roles on the Horizon
The evolution of job roles is giving rise to entirely new titles and functions within the Indian IT ecosystem. While some traditional positions are seeing reduced demand, roles like AI/ML Engineer, Data Scientist, and Cloud Architect are booming, often commanding salary premiums of 20% to 35% over conventional software development jobs. Beyond these core technical roles, a new category of jobs is emerging to support the AI infrastructure. AI Model Trainers, MLOps Engineers (who manage the lifecycle of machine learning models), and AI Infrastructure Engineers are becoming the new industrial workforce, building and maintaining the massive data centers that power AI. Job postings asking for AI skills more than doubled in the first quarter of FY27, and notably, this demand is spreading beyond pure tech roles into functions like digital marketing, graphic design, and business development, indicating that AI literacy is becoming a mainstream requirement.
The Upskilling Imperative
The gap between the demand for AI-skilled professionals and the available talent is significant. To bridge this gap, a massive wave of upskilling and reskilling is underway across the industry. Major Indian IT firms like TCS, Infosys, and Wipro have launched large-scale internal initiatives to retrain their employees, focusing on AI-first delivery models. TCS, for instance, saw 275,000 employees participate in an internal AI hackathon designed to boost AI literacy across all functions. The responsibility, however, doesn't lie with companies alone. For individual professionals, continuous learning is no longer optional but a core requirement for career resilience. The consensus among industry leaders is that one strong, demonstrable skill in AI, cloud, or cybersecurity, backed by real-world application, is becoming more valuable than several years of generic experience.
