A Monsoon Makeover
Perched at an altitude of about 1,000 metres, Saputara is a year-round destination, but the monsoon season, from July to September, is when it truly comes alive. The landscape, parched from the summer heat, undergoes a dramatic change. The rolling hills
of the Dang district turn a vibrant, deep green, and the air becomes heavy with the fresh scent of wet soil and blooming flora. Low-hanging clouds drift through the valleys, often enveloping the entire town in a soft, white mist, creating a serene and almost mystical atmosphere that photographers and nature lovers find irresistible. The temperature hovers between a pleasant 19°C and 27°C, offering a cool respite from the heat of the plains.
Chasing Waterfalls in the Rain
The monsoon is synonymous with waterfalls, and Saputara is no exception. The most famous of these is the Gira Waterfall, located about 50 kilometres from the main town. During the rainy season, this 75-foot cascade, formed by the Kapri River, becomes a powerful and breathtaking spectacle, plunging into the Ambika River below. The sound is thunderous, and the spray creates a constant fog around the viewing areas. It's a popular spot for picnics and a must-visit to witness the raw power of nature unleashed. The journey to the falls itself is scenic, taking you through lush forests and rural landscapes that are at their most beautiful during this time.
Misty Views and Cable Car Rides
Saputara offers several vantage points that provide stunning, panoramic views of the transformed landscape. Sunrise Point and Sunset Point (also known as Gandhi Shikhar) are two of the most popular. While the sun might be hidden behind clouds, the views are no less spectacular. Watching the mist roll across the hills from these points is an experience in itself. For a truly unique perspective, the Saputara Ropeway offers a thrilling ride. The cable car glides over the valley, connecting key points and offering a bird's-eye view of Saputara Lake and the dense green canopy below. The five-to-seven-minute ride through the clouds is a highlight for many visitors, especially families and couples.
Boating on a Serene Lake
At the heart of the town lies Saputara Lake, a man-made body of water surrounded by hills and gardens. During the monsoon, boating on the lake takes on a tranquil, almost dreamlike quality. You can rent a paddleboat or rowboat and drift across the calm waters as a gentle drizzle falls and mist clings to the surrounding hills. It’s a peaceful activity, perfect for soaking in the serene environment. The area around the lake is also a hub of activity, with local vendors selling hot snacks like roasted corn on the cob (bhutta) and steaming cups of chai – simple pleasures that feel extra special in the cool, rainy weather.
A Glimpse into Local Culture
Beyond its natural beauty, Saputara offers a rich cultural experience. The Saputara Tribal Museum provides a fascinating look into the lives and traditions of the local Dang tribes, including the Bhils, Warlis, and Kunbis. The Artist Village is another cultural hotspot where you can see local artisans at work, creating traditional Warli paintings and crafts from bamboo. It's a great place to pick up authentic, handmade souvenirs and support the local community. For those visiting in August and September, the annual Saputara Monsoon Festival often features a range of cultural programs and entertainment, adding another layer to the travel experience.
Planning Your Monsoon Escape
Reaching Saputara is relatively straightforward. The nearest airport is in Surat, about 160 kilometres away, while the closest major railway station is Bilimora, around 50 kilometres away, from where you can hire a taxi or take a bus. For those travelling by road, Saputara is well-connected to major cities like Mumbai (around 250 km) and Surat. When packing for a monsoon trip, waterproof jackets, sturdy non-slip shoes, and an umbrella are essential. While the rain enhances the beauty, it can also make trails slippery. It’s also wise to book accommodation in advance, as the region is a popular getaway for tourists from Gujarat and neighbouring Maharashtra during this season.
