The Core Reason: A Major Infrastructure Upgrade
The diversions are necessary to facilitate a major project at the intersection of two railway zones. According to West Central Railway, the core activities are yard remodelling at Bina and Agasod stations and connecting a new third railway line between
them. This involves complex technical work that cannot be done while regular train traffic is flowing. The project is scheduled in phases from early September through mid-October, with the most significant diversions impacting travel on various dates throughout October. Once finished, this upgrade is expected to increase the capacity of the yards, leading to more efficient train movement and better management of services in the long run.
Explaining "Non-Interlocking" Work
A key part of this project is "non-interlocking" (NI) work. In simple terms, a railway's interlocking system is the electronic brain that ensures safety. It connects signals, tracks, and points, preventing conflicting movements—for example, it stops a signal from turning green if the track ahead isn't clear. Non-interlocking work involves temporarily shutting down this automated safety system to dismantle old components and install new ones. During this period, train movements are managed manually using flags and written permissions, a process that requires extreme caution and significantly slows down operations. Trains moving through these zones are restricted to speeds as low as 15 kmph to ensure safety.
Which Key Trains Are Affected?
While 17 services are impacted, some of the key long-distance trains facing diversions on specific dates in October include the Rewanchal Express, Gondwana Express, and services connecting Bhopal with Jodhpur and Howrah. For example, Train No. 12185 (Rewa-Rani Kamalapati) and Train No. 12186 (Rani Kamalapati-Rewa) will be diverted via Itarsi and Jabalpur between October 8 and 14. Similarly, the Bhopal-Jodhpur Express (14814) will be rerouted via Sant Hirdaram Nagar, Maksi, and Kota for the first half of October. The Jabalpur-Hazrat Nizamuddin Gondwana Express (22181) is scheduled for a one-day diversion on October 8. Other affected services include the Veraval-Jabalpur Express and the Rewa-Dr Ambedkar Nagar Express, which will also run on altered paths.
Duration and Alternative Routes
The disruption isn't for the entire month but is spread across the first two weeks of October, with different trains affected on different dates until October 15. The diverted routes are significant. Instead of passing through Bina, affected trains will be rerouted through major junctions like Jabalpur, Itarsi, Katni South, Kota, Nagda, and Guna, depending on the service. This means that while the train will still reach its destination, the journey time may be longer, and it will skip its usual stops along the original route, including Bina. Passengers who planned to board or alight at these skipped stations will need to make alternative arrangements.
