Just a couple of years ago, 'prompt engineering'—the art of crafting precise instructions for AI models—was hailed as the hottest new job in tech. It seemed like a fast track to a high-paying career, with some roles commanding impressive salaries for what
was essentially mastering a new form of communication. However, the standalone role of a dedicated prompt engineer is already consolidating. Recent data shows that job postings for the specific title are declining, while the skill itself is being absorbed into broader engineering and product roles. The reason is simple: as AI models become more sophisticated and user-friendly, the need for a highly specialized 'AI whisperer' has diminished. The skill of prompting is now becoming a baseline competency, much like using a search engine, rather than a distinct profession.
From Prompters to AI-Native Builders
The new frontier for India's tech workforce is moving 'beyond prompting' into the realm of building. This involves creating custom AI solutions, agents, and workflows that solve specific business problems. Tech industry body Nasscom highlights this shift, noting a critical distinction between being 'AI-proficient' (using AI tools) and 'AI-native' (possessing deep engineering judgment to build and orchestrate AI systems). While over 90% of India's early-career tech professionals use AI, only 23% are considered truly AI-native. This evolution requires a move away from basic coding towards more complex skills like systems thinking, AI orchestration, and critically assessing AI-generated outputs. The focus is no longer on just using AI, but on architecting, integrating, and validating it within larger, more complex applications.
The Billion-Dollar Problem: AI's Trust Deficit
As companies rush to build AI-powered applications, they are running into a fundamental obstacle: AI models have a tendency to 'hallucinate,' or invent facts and sources confidently. This poses a massive risk for any enterprise building tools for high-stakes domains like finance, healthcare, or legal services, where accuracy is non-negotiable. This trust deficit is a major hurdle to wider enterprise adoption. One study highlighted a tenfold increase in fabricated citations within academic papers since the rise of generative AI, demonstrating how easily these errors can slip past even experts. Consequently, the ability to build AI tools that are not just fluent but also factually reliable has become a paramount concern.
Building with Brakes: The Rise of Verifiable AI
To combat hallucinations, a new architectural pattern has become dominant: Retrieval-Augmented Generation, or RAG. This technique enhances a large language model by connecting it to a trusted, external knowledge base. When a query is made, the system first retrieves relevant, verified information from this source and then uses the language model to generate an answer based on that grounded data. According to Nasscom, this RAG pattern is already used in 67% of deployed enterprise GenAI systems in India. The Indian RAG market is projected to grow exponentially, from around USD 93 million in 2025 to over USD 590 million by 2030, signaling a massive industry-wide investment in building AI that can check its sources.
The Human-in-the-Loop Imperative
Technology like RAG is a powerful step, but it's not a complete solution. The headline's emphasis on 'human review' points to the most critical, and perhaps most valuable, skill in this new AI era: human judgment. Nasscom has warned that as AI automates routine tasks, there's a risk of a decline in deep engineering expertise. To counter this, companies and academic institutions must create opportunities for engineers to develop independent problem-solving skills and the ability to critically evaluate AI output. The most valuable professionals will be those who can act as the 'human-in-the-loop,' applying their domain knowledge to verify AI's work, manage its limitations, and ensure its outputs are not just plausible but also correct and responsible. This elevates the human role from a simple operator to a sophisticated validator and governor of AI systems.
