The Great Diwali Migration
Every year, the days leading up to Diwali trigger one of India's largest, most concentrated periods of travel. Millions of people working in metropolitan hubs like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru make their way to their hometowns across the country. This
mass movement, often dubbed 'the great Diwali migration', places an extraordinary strain on the nation's transport infrastructure. While airlines and bus services see a surge, the real battleground is Indian Railways. As the most affordable and convenient option for many, train tickets become a prized commodity, with demand far outstripping the available supply.
Understanding the 60-Day Rule
The single most important factor in securing a Diwali train ticket is the Advance Reservation Period (ARP). As of recent rule changes in 2026, Indian Railways has revised the ARP from 120 days to 60 days for most trains. This means you can book your ticket a maximum of 60 days before your date of travel. For the intense festive rush, this 60-day mark is not a suggestion; it's the starting gun for a race where tickets on popular routes can vanish within minutes of the booking window opening at 8:00 AM. Many travellers who miss this initial window find themselves on long waiting lists with very low chances of confirmation.
The Critical Mistake of a One-Way Ticket
Herein lies the central problem many face. A traveller planning to journey home on November 6th (for Diwali on November 8th, 2026) would correctly book their ticket around September 7th. They secure their outbound journey and decide to book the return trip 'later'. However, 'later' is a trap. If their return journey is planned for November 12th, the 60-day booking window for that date would have opened around September 13th. By the time they even begin their outbound journey in November, the return tickets have been sold out for weeks. This common oversight leaves countless people stranded with a confirmed ticket to their destination but no way to get back.
Avoiding the Last-Minute Price Surge
Failing to secure a return train ticket creates a ripple effect of problems. With trains fully booked, desperate travellers turn to alternatives like flights and buses. This predictable surge in demand leads to dynamic pricing kicking in, causing fares to skyrocket. A flight that might have cost a few thousand rupees if booked in advance can cost three or four times as much in the days after Diwali. This is especially true for the 'return wave', the period when everyone travels back from their hometowns to the major cities. What was meant to be an affordable trip home can quickly become a significant financial burden, all because the return leg was not planned simultaneously with the outbound one.
Tatkal and Special Trains Are a Gamble
Many travellers pin their hopes on last-minute options like the Tatkal quota or special festival trains. While these can sometimes be a saviour, they are an unreliable strategy during Diwali. The Tatkal booking window, which opens one day before travel, sees even more ferocious competition, with tickets often gone in seconds. Indian Railways does run hundreds of special festival trains to manage the rush, and announcements for these services connecting major cities are often made in September and October. However, these trains are also in high demand, may run on less convenient schedules, and offer no guarantee of a confirmed seat. Relying on them is a gamble, not a plan.
Your Simple Two-Way Booking Strategy
The solution is straightforward: always book your onward and return journeys at the same time. First, fix your exact travel dates for both directions. Then, calculate the 60-day ARP opening date for each journey. Set a calendar reminder for the opening date of your onward journey. On that morning, log into the IRCTC portal, and book your ticket to your destination. As soon as that is confirmed, immediately book your return ticket. Since the booking window for your return date will have already been open for a few days, you need to act fast. This two-step process, executed in a single session, is the most effective way to ensure you have confirmed tickets for your entire trip, guaranteeing peace of mind and letting you focus on the festivities, not travel logistics.
