In a city already synonymous with pushing the boundaries of luxury, Dubai is adding another glittering entry to its list of world-firsts. A walkway made of 24-carat gold is set to open in the famed Gold District before the year is out.
Walking on Sunshine and Gold
Imagine strolling
down a path that quite literally glitters with pure gold. That is the experience Dubai plans to offer with its latest tourist attraction: the world's first and longest walkway constructed using 24-carat gold. This shimmering path will be located in the heart of the Deira Gold District, a newly launched destination that builds upon the legacy of the city's historic Gold Souk. According to Rashid Al Harmoodi, a senior director at the Dubai Gold District, the ambitious project is scheduled to open before the end of 2026, possibly within the next two months. While exact details on the walkway's length and construction cost remain under wraps, the announcement confirms Dubai's commitment to turning the idiom 'streets paved with gold' into a tangible reality for residents and tourists.
The New Heart of Old Dubai
The golden walkway is the star attraction of the recently launched Dubai Gold District in Deira, a historic commercial hub. Officially unveiled in January 2026 by developer Ithra Dubai, the district is a modern extension and rebranding of the world-famous Gold Souk. It's a purpose-built destination designed to consolidate the entire jewellery industry, from wholesale trade and bullion dealing to retail and investment, all in one place. The area already hosts over 1,000 retailers, including major jewellery brands, and welcomed shoppers from over 147 nationalities in 2025. The new district aims to blend the traditional charm of the old souk with modern infrastructure, including enhanced accessibility, more parking, and a mix of residential, office, and hotel spaces to support the influx of global visitors and traders.
A Strategy Set in Gold
This dazzling project is more than just a photo opportunity; it's a strategic move to cement Dubai's status as a top-tier global destination for both tourism and the gold trade. The United Arab Emirates is already the world's second-largest physical gold trading destination, and this new attraction is designed to amplify that reputation. By creating a unique, must-see landmark, the city aims to draw more visitors to its historic trading heart, encouraging them to explore beyond the modern skyscrapers. The announcement of the walkway was strategically made alongside another record-breaking achievement in the district: the unveiling of the world's heaviest pair of gold earrings, a 16.5-kilogram set of traditional Indian 'jhumkas'. These initiatives signal a clear strategy: to fuse commerce with unforgettable experiences, driving both business and tourism.
What Visitors Can Expect
For travellers heading to Dubai this winter, the gold walkway promises a novel experience. It provides a unique opportunity to connect with the city's heritage as a 'City of Gold' in a very direct way. The district is already experiencing significant growth, with a reported 20% increase in wholesale gold trading offices and a 15% rise in new retail stores this year alone. Visitors can combine a walk on the golden path with a shopping trip through the hundreds of glittering jewellery stores, a traditional 'abra' boat ride across the nearby Dubai Creek, and a visit to the neighbouring spice and perfume souks. While an official opening date has not been confirmed, visitors are advised to keep an eye on official announcements. The project is part of a larger plan that includes developing the Middle East's largest gold and jewellery exhibition in the district, further solidifying its central role in the precious metals market.
