Day 1: Arrival and Exploration in Kandy
Your journey begins in Kandy, Sri Lanka's cultural capital. After arriving and dropping your bags at an affordable guesthouse (expect to pay around $10-$20 USD per night), your first stop is the city's heart: Kandy Lake. A leisurely walk around its perimeter
is free and offers beautiful views. In the evening, visit the famed Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. While the entrance fee for foreigners is around $10 USD, it's a key cultural experience. Day 2: The World's Most Scenic Train Ride

Day 3: Hiking and Views in Ella

Start your morning with a relatively easy hike up Little Adam's Peak for panoramic views of the surrounding valleys. The hike is free and takes about two hours round trip. In the afternoon, walk along the tracks to the iconic Nine Arch Bridge to watch the blue train pass through the valley below. Ella is known for its laid-back vibe and cheap eats. You'll find numerous small cafes and restaurants serving both local and Western food at budget-friendly prices. Accommodation here is also plentiful and affordable, with many guesthouses offering stunning views right from your room.
Day 4: From the Hills to the Beach
It's time to trade the mountains for the sea. The journey from Ella to the southern coast is best done by bus or a shared van. While there's no direct train, the bus is the most economical option. You can catch a direct bus to Matara, then a short connecting bus or tuk-tuk to Mirissa. The entire trip should take around four to five hours and cost very little. Once in Mirissa, check into a beachside hostel or guesthouse. Spend the rest of the afternoon acclimatizing to the coastal heat, perhaps by taking your first dip in the Indian Ocean and enjoying a fresh coconut on the sand. Day 5: Sun, Sand, and Departure from Mirissa
For your final day, you have a few options. If you're visiting between November and April, consider an early morning whale-watching tour. Mirissa is one of the best places in the world to spot blue whales, though tours can be a splurge for a backpacker budget, often costing around $50-$60 USD. A more affordable alternative is to simply enjoy the beautiful beaches. Walk over to the famous Coconut Tree Hill for incredible photos, explore the more secluded Secret Beach, or try your hand at surfing. Enjoy one last Sri Lankan rice and curry for lunch at a local spot like Dhana's Curry Pot before making your way towards Colombo for your departure, or continuing your coastal adventure.
