The Global Shake-Up
On July 1, 2026, Japan implemented its first major visa fee revision in nearly five decades, a significant move that caught the attention of global travellers. The increase was substantial: the cost for a single-entry visa jumped fivefold from 3,000 yen
to 15,000 yen, which translates to approximately ₹8,700. Similarly, the fee for a multiple-entry visa surged from 6,000 yen to 30,000 yen, or about ₹17,500. Japanese officials explained that the previous fee structure, unchanged since 1978, no longer reflected current administrative costs, inflation, and exchange rate fluctuations. The hike aims to align Japan’s visa charges more closely with those of other G7 nations and manage the costs associated with record tourist arrivals. This sweeping change affects travellers from most countries requiring a pre-arrival visa, including nations like China and the Philippines.
Good News for Indian Travellers
Here is the crucial piece of information that changes everything for prospective tourists from India: Indian nationals are exempt from this global fee hike. Despite the dramatic increase for most of the world, the Embassy of Japan in India confirmed that the visa fee for Indian passport holders applying within India remains unchanged. You will continue to pay the same ₹500 fee that has been in place for years. This applies to both single-entry and multiple-entry visas, making Japan one of the most accessible long-haul destinations for Indians from a visa fee perspective. The decision to shield Indian applicants from the increase is widely seen as a reflection of the strong bilateral relationship between India and Japan, though an official reason has not been detailed.
What Is the Actual Total Cost?
While the core visa fee remains a very affordable ₹500, it's important to understand the full cost before you budget for your application. The ₹500 is the fee charged by the embassy for processing and issuing the visa. However, applications are handled through VFS Global, Japan's authorized visa application partner in India, which charges a mandatory service fee. This service fee is currently ₹800, inclusive of taxes. Therefore, the total amount an Indian applicant can expect to pay for a standard tourist visa is ₹1,300. This all-inclusive cost covers the embassy fee, VFS Global's logistical support, document handling, and appointment scheduling. Understanding this breakdown ensures there are no surprises when you go to submit your paperwork.
The Fine Print and Other Changes
Along with the global fee hike, Japan also made another key change: the transit visa category has been abolished. Previously, travellers could get a transit visa for a very low cost, around ₹50, for short layovers. Now, those transiting through Japan may need to apply for a standard short-stay visa, so it is essential to check the specific requirements based on your itinerary. Another important detail is that while Indian citizens are exempt, the new, higher fees do apply to foreign nationals who are applying for a Japanese visa from within India. For them, a single-entry visa application submitted in India will now cost ₹8,650, and a multiple-entry visa will be ₹17,350, aligning with the new global standard.
A Major Advantage for India
The exemption from Japan's historic visa fee hike places Indian travellers at a significant advantage. While tourists from many other nations now face a preparation cost that is thousands of rupees higher, the financial barrier for Indians remains remarkably low. This special arrangement underscores the growing diplomatic and cultural ties between the two countries. For Indian families, solo adventurers, and business travellers, it means that the cost of securing entry permission remains a negligible part of the overall trip budget. In a world where travel costs are generally on the rise, this policy makes Japan an even more attractive and welcoming destination for anyone holding an Indian passport.
