A New Space Race Begins at Home
India's space industry is undergoing its most significant transformation since its inception. Once the exclusive domain of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), the sector is now buzzing with the energy of over 400 startups. This shift was catalysed
by landmark government reforms in 2020 and the formalised Indian Space Policy of 2023, which opened the doors for private companies, or Non-Governmental Entities (NGEs), to participate in end-to-end space activities. The goal is to grow India's slice of the global space economy from around $8.4 billion to a projected $44 billion by 2033. This isn't just about business; it's a strategic pivot, creating a dynamic partnership between the state and private innovators.
The Rocket Builders: Skyroot & Agnikul
Leading the charge are ambitious startups building the vehicles that will carry India's commercial aspirations into orbit. Hyderabad-based Skyroot Aerospace, founded by former ISRO scientists, made history on July 18, 2026, by launching Vikram-1, the country's first privately developed orbital rocket. This successful launch, dubbed 'Mission Aagaman' (arrival), placed India among the elite few nations with private orbital launch capability. Not far behind, Chennai's Agnikul Cosmos is pioneering with its Agnibaan rocket, notable for the world's first single-piece 3D-printed engine, which flew on a suborbital test mission in May 2024. Agnikul is also developing reusable rocket technology to drastically cut launch costs, announcing Mission-02 to recover a booster at sea. These companies are proving that Indian startups can compete on the global stage, offering cost-effective and reliable launch services.
Beyond the Launchpad: Satellites and Services
The innovation isn't just about getting to space; it's also about what we do once we're there. The satellite segment is flourishing with companies creating sophisticated hardware and data services. Pixxel is building one of the world's most advanced hyperspectral satellite constellations, capable of providing detailed environmental and agricultural monitoring. In a major public-private partnership, a Pixxel-led consortium will build India's national Earth Observation constellation. Meanwhile, Dhruva Space offers full-stack satellite solutions, from building small satellites to providing launch deployers that have been successfully tested on ISRO's PSLV missions. Another innovator, GalaxEye, launched the world's first satellite combining optical and radar imaging (OptoSAR), offering all-weather surveillance capabilities. These firms are creating the infrastructure for a data-driven economy powered from orbit.
The Government's Role: From Monopolist to Enabler
This private-sector boom would be impossible without a fundamental shift in government policy. The Indian Space Policy 2023 clearly demarcates roles: ISRO will focus on advanced research, deep space missions like Chandrayaan and Gaganyaan, and national security projects. Private companies are now encouraged to handle manufacturing, commercial launches, and satellite services. The key to this transition is the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe), established as a single-window agency to facilitate, authorise, and regulate private space activities. IN-SPACe acts as a bridge, giving startups access to ISRO’s invaluable expertise, testing facilities, and technologies, thereby nurturing a collaborative rather than competitive environment. It has already issued over 130 authorisations and facilitated hundreds of applications from the private sector.
A Collaborative Future, Not a Confrontation
The narrative of India's new space age is not one of private upstarts replacing a public institution. Instead, it is a story of symbiosis. Skyroot's historic Vikram-1 launch, for example, was heavily supported by ISRO, which provided access to its test facilities and launchpad. ISRO veterans are also contributing their expertise, with many founding or joining these new ventures, ensuring decades of accumulated knowledge fuels this new ecosystem. This collaborative model leverages ISRO’s deep experience and robust infrastructure while harnessing the private sector's agility, innovation, and access to capital. By having private players handle more routine operational launches, ISRO is freed up to push the boundaries of science and exploration, ensuring India remains at the forefront of space discovery for decades to come.
