A New Chapter in Overnight Rail Travel
The Vande Bharat Express, which has already revolutionized daytime travel with its semi-high-speed chair-car services, is now poised to enter the overnight travel segment. The Vande Bharat sleeper is the next evolution, designed to connect cities over longer
distances of 800 km or more. Unlike the current chair-car versions, these trains will feature sleeper berths, allowing passengers to travel long distances overnight in comfort. The first Vande Bharat sleeper was successfully launched in January 2026. The introduction of these sleeper services marks a significant upgrade from traditional overnight trains, aiming to compete with air travel by offering a convenient, time-saving, and premium experience.
The Proposed Route: A Boon for Maharashtra
While the headline specifically mentions Pune and Solapur, recent reports indicate this will be part of the much-anticipated Bengaluru-Mumbai Vande Bharat sleeper service, the country's second such train. This route is expected to launch as early as November 1, 2026. The planned corridor will pass through Kalaburagi, with stops at Solapur and Pune, before continuing to Kalyan and terminating at Mumbai CSMT. The inclusion of Pune and Solapur is a major development for the Central Railway zone. It will provide a premium, high-speed link for passengers from these bustling industrial and commercial hubs to both India's IT capital, Bengaluru, and its financial capital, Mumbai. Currently, many trains on this corridor take between 22 and 24 hours; the new Vande Bharat sleeper aims to cover the distance in approximately 16 hours, saving travelers up to eight hours.
What to Expect Onboard
The Vande Bharat sleeper trains are engineered for a superior passenger experience. A standard trainset will have 16 fully air-conditioned coaches, accommodating up to 823 passengers. The configuration includes three classes: AC First, AC 2-Tier, and AC 3-Tier. The interiors are designed with a focus on comfort and modern aesthetics, featuring better-cushioned berths, ambient lighting, and easier access to upper berths. Passengers can expect amenities such as individual reading lights, USB charging points, onboard Wi-Fi, and a passenger information system. Safety is also a key focus, with the train equipped with the indigenous 'Kavach' anti-collision system, CCTV cameras, and an emergency talk-back system to communicate with the crew. Furthermore, the coaches will have bio-vacuum toilets and fully sealed gangways for a cleaner, quieter journey.
Timeline and What’s Next
According to official announcements, the Bengaluru-Mumbai Vande Bharat sleeper is slated for a launch on November 1, 2026, to coincide with Karnataka Rajyotsava. This service will be the first Vande Bharat sleeper for southern India. While the inaugural run has been proposed, the final schedule for regular commercial operations is typically announced by Indian Railways closer to the date. The prototype coaches, manufactured by BEML, have already been rolled out for trials. Following the launch, passengers can expect the official fare structure and booking details to be released. This route is part of a larger plan by Indian Railways to roll out more sleeper services on key long-distance corridors, fundamentally changing how India travels overnight.
