The critical travel corridor between India's IT hub, Bengaluru, and its financial capital, Mumbai, has entered a new era of rail travel. The much-anticipated Vande Bharat Sleeper Express was flagged off on November 1, promising to redefine overnight journeys.
A Leap in Speed and Connectivity
On November 1, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw flagged off the inaugural service from Sir M. Visvesvaraya Terminal (SMVT) in Bengaluru. This launch marks a significant upgrade for one of the country's busiest routes, connecting key economic centres across Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Maharashtra. The train is expected to complete the journey in approximately 16 hours, a substantial reduction from the 22 to 24 hours taken by most existing services. This time saving of nearly six to eight hours is a game-changer for professionals, students, and tourists who frequently travel between the two metropolises. Regular services are set to commence from Mumbai on November 2 and from Bengaluru on November 3, operating six days a week.
Inside the Modern Sleeper Cabins
The 16-coach trainset is designed for passenger comfort, accommodating 823 passengers across three classes: AC First Class, AC 2-Tier, and AC 3-Tier. The interiors represent a major departure from conventional sleeper coaches. Berths are designed to be wider and better cushioned, ensuring a more restful journey. Each berth is equipped with its own reading light and charging sockets. The overall design focuses on creating a pleasant ambience, with improved soundproofing to reduce track noise and sensor-based ambient lighting. The gangways between coaches are fully sealed, which helps maintain air conditioning and allows for smoother, quieter movement through the train.
Upgraded Amenities for a Premium Experience
The Vande Bharat Sleeper is packed with modern amenities that set it apart. The bio-vacuum toilets are equipped with touchless fittings, a feature designed to enhance hygiene. Passengers in the First AC coach will have access to exclusive hot water shower facilities. For safety, the train is fitted with CCTV cameras, smoke alarms, and the indigenous Kavach anti-collision system. Automatic doors, digital information displays, and Wi-Fi-enabled infotainment systems are also part of the package, ensuring passengers are connected and informed throughout their journey. Special attention has also been given to accessibility, with features designed to assist passengers with disabilities and an improved ladder design for easier access to upper berths.
Route, Schedule, and Fares
The regular service from Bengaluru to Mumbai (Train No. 27652) will depart SMVT Bengaluru at 7:45 pm and arrive at CSMT Mumbai at 11:55 am the next day, running six days a week, excluding Mondays. In the opposite direction, the train from Mumbai (Train No. 27651) will leave CSMT at 8:10 pm and reach Bengaluru at noon the next day, not running on Tuesdays.
