Hampi: Where to Stay
Choosing your base in Hampi depends entirely on the vibe you seek. For proximity to the main Virupaksha Temple and the bustling bazaar, find a guesthouse in Hampi Bazaar itself. This area puts you in the heart of the ancient city, with easy access to eateries
and the river. For more comfort and family-friendly hotels, consider Kamalapur, a town about 10 minutes away that offers modern amenities. The once-famous backpacker hub across the river, Virupapur Gaddi or 'Hippie Island', had its character altered by demolitions, but the quieter, nature-focused area of Sanapur nearby now offers a similar laid-back experience with paddy-field views.
Hampi: Getting Around
Hampi's sprawling ruins are best explored on two wheels. Renting a scooter or moped (around ₹400-600 per day) gives you the freedom to navigate the dusty tracks connecting the Royal Enclosure to the Vittala Temple at your own pace. Bicycles are a cheaper and more eco-friendly alternative for the relatively flat terrain. For those who prefer not to drive, hiring an auto-rickshaw for a full or half-day tour is a popular choice. Drivers are well-versed with the main circuits. Remember that many sites, especially on Hemakuta Hill and along the river, are only accessible on foot, so comfortable walking shoes are essential.
Gokarna: Where to Stay
Gokarna accommodation is all about the beaches. For a social, backpacker atmosphere with numerous cafes, Om Beach is the place to be. Kudle Beach, a beautiful C-shaped bay, offers a quieter setting perfect for swimming, yoga, and relaxation, with simple guesthouses and resorts. If you want to be close to the main Mahabaleshwar Temple and market, staying in Gokarna town provides a more traditional, convenient base. For ultimate seclusion, the remote Half Moon and Paradise beaches are accessible only by foot or boat, offering very basic huts for an off-grid experience. Most stays near the beaches are rustic, with air conditioning and large pools being uncommon.
Gokarna: Getting Around
The best way to explore Gokarna's coastline is by trekking. A well-trodden path connects Gokarna Main Beach to Kudle, Om, Half Moon, and Paradise beaches, offering stunning cliff-top views of the Arabian Sea. The trek is a highlight for many visitors. For longer distances, like travelling from the town to a specific beach, auto-rickshaws are readily available. Renting a scooter is also a great option, giving you the flexibility to explore the main town and the various beach access roads easily. To visit nearby attractions like Murudeshwar, hiring a local taxi is the most convenient method.
Connecting Hampi and Gokarna
Travelling between the ancient ruins and the coast is most commonly done by an overnight bus. Several private operators run direct sleeper services connecting Hampi and Gokarna, a journey that typically takes around 7 to 8 hours. This is often the most convenient option. Alternatively, you can take a combination of buses or trains. This would involve travelling from Hampi to Hospet (the nearest major transport hub), then taking a bus or train to Hubballi or Ankola, and finally connecting to Gokarna from there. While less direct, this route can offer more flexibility with timings.
