Step 1: Start With a Clean Canvas
Every great makeup application begins with clean skin. Even if you cleansed the night before, your skin produces oils and sheds dead cells while you sleep. Using a gentle cleanser removes this buildup, along with any dirt or impurities, creating a fresh
base for products to adhere to properly. A clean canvas prevents makeup from looking patchy and ensures a smoother application. Opt for a cream, gel, or oil cleanser that doesn’t strip your skin of its natural oils, which can lead to dryness or inflammation.
Step 2: Balance and Deeply Hydrate
Once your skin is clean, the next focus is hydration. This is arguably the most crucial phase for makeup longevity. Start with a hydrating, alcohol-free toner to rebalance your skin's pH and prepare it to absorb the products that follow. Next, apply a targeted serum. A serum with hyaluronic acid is excellent for drawing moisture into the skin, making it plump and reducing the chance of makeup settling into fine lines. For oily skin, niacinamide can help control oil production and minimise pores. These ingredients create a hydrated cushion, so your makeup looks fresh and doesn’t disappear.
Step 3: Lock It In With Moisturiser
Moisturiser is non-negotiable, regardless of your skin type. Its job is to lock in the hydration from your serum and create a smooth, comfortable surface for makeup. One of the main reasons makeup fades is because dry skin pulls moisture from the foundation itself. For oily skin, a lightweight, oil-free gel moisturiser works best to hydrate without adding grease. For dry skin, a richer cream with ingredients like ceramides or shea butter will prevent flakiness and keep makeup from clinging to dry patches.
Step 4: The Crucial Pause to Prevent Pilling
This might be the most overlooked step, but it’s a game-changer. Rushing your skincare is a primary cause of 'pilling', where products clump into tiny balls as you apply foundation. After applying each layer of skincare—serum, moisturiser—wait at least 60 seconds for it to fully absorb. If skincare is just sitting on the surface, it will mix with your makeup, causing it to separate and wear off faster. Allowing products to sink in ensures each layer can do its job without interfering with the next.
Step 5: Prime for a Flawless Finish
Primer is the final step in your prep routine, acting as the bridge between your skincare and makeup. It creates a smooth barrier that helps foundation glide on evenly, minimises the appearance of pores, and gives your makeup something to grip onto for extended wear. The key is to choose a primer that suits your skin's needs. A mattifying primer can control shine in the T-zone, while a hydrating or illuminating primer can give a dewy glow to dry or dull skin. Make sure your primer's base (water or silicone) matches your foundation's to prevent separation.
Step 6: Don't Forget the Lips
For lipstick that applies smoothly and lasts through sipping and talking, your lips need prep too. While you're doing your facial skincare, apply a nourishing lip balm. This gives it time to absorb and soften your lips. If you have any flaky skin, you can gently exfoliate with a lip scrub and a damp washcloth before applying the balm. By the time you’re ready for lipstick, your pout will be a smooth, hydrated canvas ready for long-lasting colour.
