Several Indian startups are at the forefront of this green revolution. One of the most prominent is Zerocircle. Founded by Neha Jain, the company produces a range of seaweed-based materials that are biodegradable and even safe for marine life to consume. Zerocircle partners with farming communities in coastal states like Gujarat and Tamil Nadu, ensuring a sustainable supply chain that also empowers local economies. Another key player is the Bangalore-based Sea6 Energy. Known for its work in automating ocean farming, the company is developing seaweed-based bioplastic films and compostable coatings for food packaging. These companies are not just creating products; they are building an entirely new, circular ecosystem.
From Seaweed to Takeaway Box
The process of turning seaweed into packaging is a feat of green chemistry. It begins with harvesting the seaweed, which is then dried and processed to extract its natural polymers. These extracted substances are mixed with other natural materials to enhance properties like strength and flexibility. The resulting bio-based material can then be engineered into various forms, including flexible films, grease-proof coatings for paper boxes, and even moulded containers. One of Zerocircle’s key innovations is that its materials can often be used with existing plastic and paper manufacturing machinery, reducing the need for costly new infrastructure and making the switch to sustainability more accessible for brands.
Hurdles on the Horizon
Despite its immense promise, the path to widespread adoption is not without challenges. The primary hurdle is often cost. Currently, many sustainable alternatives, including those made from algae, can be more expensive than conventional plastic. Zerocircle, for example, notes its product is at a premium, though it expects to reduce costs significantly in the coming years. Scaling up production to meet massive demand, ensuring consistent material quality, and navigating complex supply chains are other significant obstacles. Furthermore, building consumer awareness and creating efficient waste collection systems for compostable materials are crucial for ensuring these innovations achieve their full environmental potential.
