A Policy Big Bang
The single most critical catalyst has been a radical shift in government policy. For decades, space was the sole domain of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). But in 2020, the government unlocked the sector for private enterprise, a move codified
by the landmark Indian Space Policy 2023. This policy created a clear framework for non-governmental entities to participate in end-to-end space activities. It established the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) as a single-window agency to promote, authorise, and supervise private companies. This decision transformed private firms from mere component suppliers for ISRO into independent innovators capable of building, launching, and operating their own space assets.
Meet the New Trailblazers
This new policy environment has allowed a new breed of ambitious startups to flourish, growing from just a handful a decade ago to over 450 by mid-2026. Two names frequently making headlines are Skyroot Aerospace and Agnikul Cosmos. Hyderabad-based Skyroot Aerospace made history in July 2026 by launching Vikram-1, India's first privately developed orbital rocket. This milestone placed India in the elite club of nations, alongside the US and China, with private launch capabilities. Meanwhile, Chennai-based Agnikul Cosmos, operating out of IIT Madras, is pioneering single-piece 3D-printed rocket engines, drastically cutting manufacturing time and cost. After a successful suborbital flight in 2024, it is now advancing towards reusable rocket technology.
The Fuel of Finance and Talent
Ambitious ideas require significant capital, and investors have taken notice. Indian space startups have attracted hundreds of millions of dollars in funding in recent years. Skyroot Aerospace, for instance, recently achieved a valuation of over $1 billion, becoming the sector's first unicorn. This infusion of cash is supported by government initiatives like a dedicated venture capital fund and liberalised Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) norms. Equally important is the human capital. The sector is now attracting top talent, including seasoned scientists and engineers from ISRO itself. While this creates a challenge for the state agency, it enriches the private ecosystem with invaluable experience and expertise, creating a virtuous cycle of innovation.
More Than Just Rockets
While launch vehicles like Vikram-1 grab the headlines, much of the sector's long-term value lies in downstream applications. The real gold rush is in leveraging satellite technology for services on Earth. This includes high-speed satellite internet, precise Earth observation for agriculture and climate monitoring, advanced navigation, and data analytics for insurance and urban planning. Startups are not just building rockets; they are creating the infrastructure for a new digital economy powered by space. Agnikul's plan to launch an AI data centre in orbit is a prime example of this forward-thinking approach. This shift towards data monetisation is expected to generate the majority of the sector's future revenues.
An Expanding Universe of Opportunity
The numbers paint a compelling picture of growth. India's space economy, valued at around $8.4 billion today, is projected to surge to over $40 billion by the next decade. This growth allows ISRO to shed the burden of routine commercial launches and focus its expertise on deep-space exploration, national security, and big science missions like Gaganyaan. Challenges remain, including intense global competition, the need for a more comprehensive legal framework beyond the current policy, and the inherent risks of the space business. However, the momentum is undeniable. By creating a collaborative ecosystem where a pioneering government agency works in synergy with dynamic private startups, India is not just launching rockets; it's launching a whole new industry.
